Rose blooms galore!

by Tricia

Remember about two weeks ago I wrote a post about all the roses in my yard? I told you that they were all in bloom at once and that the scent was heavenly?

I was working bellow the roses in the middle photo planting some new plants when the roses were in full bloom and I ended up being covered in petals. The branches of one of my largest roses, William Baffin, were moving in the light breeze and petals were raining down on me.

I still have roses in bloom but different roses, different colors and different scents now. The lilies are blooming too.

I thought you might enjoy seeing the roses in bloom so here’s a sample from my garden for you to enjoy.

Fading William Baffin blooms:

That was a whole lot of pink wasn’t it? If only you could smell it too!

The Aquarium that never was

by Tricia

This is a photo of an old building on Lakeshore Blvd. in Toronto, near the Redpath Sugar factory. Actually it might even be part of the factory.

This mural was painted on the side of the building quite a while ago when they were talking about Toronto getting an aquarium. I think that was more than 10 years ago. Well, obviously the aquarium never happened or else I’d probably have some additional photos to show you of the actual site.

I really wish it had come into being. I love aquariums. I guess the closest thing that we have anywhere near Toronto would be Marine Land in Niagara Falls – but that’s more of a show.

Oh, we do have a beautiful large zoo here in Toronto but it doesn’t have many aquatic animals or fish. Still, if you ever do come to Toronto and you enjoy zoo’s please do try to take the time to go to the Toronto Metropolitan zoo as I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

I used to go several times a year, but I haven’t been there for perhaps the last three years. I guess it’s time for another visit very soon.

One of my favorite aquariums was in Vancouver. Every time I went to Vancouver I went to the aquarium. I used to love watching the Beluga whales. Unfortunately they were going to close down that aquarium and a few years ago they shipped most of the Belugas to Marine Land where I think they all died when they got an infection. So sad.

Do you have an aquarium or zoo near you? If so, do you go very often? At least once a year?

Love and Peace

by Tricia

loveandpeace11

I miss my Love and Peace rose. I lost it this past winter. It just didn’t come back.

It’s always done well through the winter and we had a very mild winter this year so I don’t think that’s why it failed. I think it was diseased.

Last year in the spring I noticed that it had a woody, fungal looking growth just at the soil line. I carefully cut out that growth and removed the soil that had been around it and crossed my fingers. Love and Peace took off like it normally did and I didn’t have any problems at all with it last year.

This year when I saw that it wasn’t starting to come back to life after winter I took at look at it’s base and it seems that a bit of what I’ll call the fungal growth was back but certainly not as bad as the year before. Could this have been the problem that caused it to die?

Does anyone know what kind of disorder, infection or disease I’m talking about? I’d love to learn more about it. You see, once I dig up Love and Peace I want to plant a new rose in the same area. I don’t want the new rose to get sick though if whatever might have killed Love and Peace is still in the soil.

Any ideas?
