This weeks Theme is Empty

Trees in January. Empty branches, barren of leaves.

We’ve got an empty beach type theme going on across our sites today. This photo was taken one January in the Beach area of Toronto.

For some reason I’ve always liked the look of trees, especially when they are free of leaves, or in the early spring when the leaf buds are tiny and bright green.

The black Hollyhock

A couple of years ago I started growing black Hollyhocks in my garden. I suppose they are more of an extremely dark burgundy, but they are called black.

Nothing much happened for the first two years that I grew them. They grew but didn’t produce flowers. I suppose they must have sprouted a new plant or two somehow though, as the two clumps of black hollyhocks that I’ve been growing finally decided to bloom last year.

Hollyhocks are biennial plants. That means that they usually only grow green leaves in the first year, and do not produce any flowers. In their second year they often bloom profusely. If you grow plants that are biennial you should plant new plants two or more years in a row so that you can have some bloom from some of them each year.

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.

Drinking is for the birds

This weeks Theme is Drink

Anyone that’s been reading this site for a while knows that I enjoy having birds in our backyard garden.

We have three feeders in our tiny yard. We have to fill them up almost daily since there are so many birds eating from the feeders. I think we must be the only people around for blocks that feed the birds the way they go through the seed we put out for them.

In the five years that we’ve been at the house I’ve only seen a humming bird twice. We have two hummingbird feeders, that I clean and fill regularly in the hopes of enticing the tiny creatures to have a drink.

Here’s a photo of our nicest hummingbird feeder:

And here’s another view of the same feeder:

Have a great weekend and Happy St. Patrick’s day. Don’t drink too much now.
