My five new roses – your experiences?

by Tricia

Does anyone grow any of these roses? I’ve listed the roses that I purchased a week ago to replace the ones I lost last winter.

When I bought the roses … five in all, I knew exactly where I was going to put them, but now – a week later, I’m looking at them going what was I thinking?

These are the roses that I purchased:

Joseph’s Coat –

A large flowered climbing rose that grows from 8 to 10 feet tall by 4 feet wide. hardy in zones four through 10. Bred by Armstrong and Swim in 1969; mild fragrance, 23 to 28 petals – repeats occasionally later in season. Blooms are a red blend – but I’ve noted that they range from a combination of orange, pink, red, yellow and white mixed in each flower. It’s apparently a very thorny rose with average disease resistance.

Climbing Iceberg –

Bred in the UK by Cant in 1968, White semi-double blooms with 9 to 16 petals, blooms in flushes throughout the season; Grows to a height of 8 to 15 feet and is hardy in zones 4 to 9. May or may not have a mild fragrance.

Chicago Peace

A hybrid Tea originally bred in the USA by Graeme Johnston in 1962. Blooms are large- up to 6 inches, and are a pink blend with 45 to 60 petals. The blooms have a very double form. This rose blooms in flushes throughout the season and grows to a height of 4.5 feet to 6.5 feet. Mild fragrance. Susceptible to blackspot, requires winter protection. Helpmefind -Roses says it’s only hardy to zone 7 but they often state high zones for hybrid teas.

Climbing Westerland –

Kordes bred rose, 1969, scented – strong rose, spicy fragrance; Apricot & apricot blend, Semi-double (9-16 petals) bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Grows to a height of 4 to 12 feet by 4 feet wide and is disease resistant. No hardiness info but I think it’s hardy to at least zone 5a.

Double Delight –

This is a hybrid tea that was first bred in 1977 in the US by Herbert C. Swim. The blooms are a red blend with red and white within, and red edges. It has a spicy fragrance. The average diameter of the flowers are 5 inches and each bloom is double with 17 to 25 petals. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Grows to a height of 3 feet to 5 feet and a width of 2 feet to 5 feet. This rose is apparently susceptible to mildew and requires winter protection.

Wow, would you look at that? Every rose that I purchased was first bred in the 60’s. Isn’t that odd? All of them, with the exception of the Climbing Iceberg are multicolored roses. However, I’ve noticed that my standard iceberg often gets a pink blend in the petals as they age.

I really wanted to replace my Love and Peace but I couldn’t find one. That’s why I got the Chicago Peace. I’m hoping that it really does turn out to be as hardy as Love and Peace was because I didn’t have any problems with that rose. I think it’s demise was due to a fungal infection. It actually got a fungus like woody growth near the base of the rose. I think I’ll have to remove all the soil in that portion of the garden where Love and Peace was before I plant it’s replacement as I fear that the fungus or virus might still be in the soil. Anyone familiar with the problem that I’m discussing?

As you can see I’ve chosen some roses that get quite large and I have a small jam packed garden. This should be fun!

Obviously I’m not a rose novice but if anyone has experience with any of the roses that I’ve listed above I’d love it if you’d tell me how the rose faired in your care.

I’m particularly interested in how these roses do in cold zones.

I’m in Toronto and it’s classed as a Canadian Zone 6b or a US zone 5b. I know I’ll have to winter protect the hybrid teas I purchased but I’ve been very successful with roses that are not supposed to be all that hardy – like Just Joey, and Valencia for example, so I’m not too worried.

I do prefer to buy roses that are hardy to a plain Jane zone 5 or lower though as it gives them more of a chance of survival if we have a really harsh winter.

Look no further if you are shopping for bedroom furnishings

I’ve been asked to do a write up for the online bedroom furniture and decor store TotalBedroom.com.

Headquartered in New Jersey, TotalBedroom.com is an online store that specializes in the sale of bedroom furniture for both adults and children, as well as bed linens and bedroom accents. The company had it’s start in 2003, and since that time has built it’s reputation as a provider of top quality bedroom furniture and accessories.

I’ve viewed each of the sections of the website, and I must say that they have taken the time to select some beautiful bedroom furnishings in traditional and contemporary styles. You’ll find bedroom furnishings to suit small and large spaces. Beds with built in extra storage compartments for those who need to be economical with their space, and luxurious full sized bedroom sets for those who have large rooms to fill.

brookland-leather-bed-dark-brown-med2.jpgOne of the bedroom furnishings that caught my eye was this beautiful Brookland Leather bed. The bed comes in queen and king sizes, and is constructed with a hardwood frame. Isn’t it lovely? This bed is actually on sale right now too!

I’d imagine that most of us are used to shopping in department stores or smaller retail stores that specialize in specific types of furnishings. If you have been shopping for bedroom furniture recently you are probably familiar with retail prices. I’ve found that the prices are substantially lower at TotalBedrooms.com when compared to similar items that can be found in retail stores.

Navigating the site is quite easy. Just use the menu that’s located on the left side of each page of the site to select the items you are interested in.

The top of the menu begins with TotalBedrooms.com’s Best Values section where you can find queen sized beds under $399, Headboards from $149, Platform beds from $154, Queen sets under $1,999 and comforter sets from $169.

You can shop the site by brand name or by the type of product. Listings include Daybeds, Bedroom sets, Beds, headboards, Futons, Futon Covers, Bedroom Furniture, Bedding, Kids Furniture, Bedroom Accents, Mattresses, Bed frames and Trundles. Their selection of beds range from Twin size beds all the way up to California King size beds in styles that include platform, sleigh, leather, wood, metal and lovely canopy beds.

bedding-diamonte-med2.jpg If you are interested in purchasing sheets, bedding or comforter sets look no further. TotalBedroom.com has a wide selection of styles in a variety of price ranges to suit your budget.

I’m quite taken with this Diamonte Bedding set. It’s lovely and looks luxurious. I even like the metal bed frame that it’s being displayed on.

The Deluxe Diamonte Bedding pack comes with a comforter, bedskirt, shams and a tri pillow pack. Whereas the Super pack includes all of the above plus Euro Pillows. This set is available in queen to California King size and ranges in price from $359 to $419.

The main page of the site lists specials such as Platform beds at reduced prices, Items that are on sale for between 35% to 65% off, Bedroom sets that are on sale and new items that have just been added to the inventory. You’ll also find specials listed at the bottom of most of the pages on the site as well.

If you happen to find a product being sold on TotalBedroom.com that’s being sold elsewhere for less you can inform them of the price difference and they’ll try to beat the price that you’ve found. See their Price Match Policy for more information.

If all that I’ve described above isn’t enough what do you think of the fact that TotalBedroom.com offers top level delivery service free of charge? They even use an online tracking system that will allow you to check the status of your order. At this time they only ship to the 48 states in the Continental USA.

All in all I think this is a well thought out website. It’s easy to navigate and is filled with a wide selection of products that anyone would be pleased to purchase for their home.

Reclaimed teak furniture

by Tricia

We have a hand crafted teak table. It’s made out of recovered or reclaimed teak. Since teak is a protected wood in many countries, yet still a product that many nations continue to rely on to fuel their economy some manufacturers of teak furniture have taken to using recovered teak wood. I really like the fact that this beautiful table that we purchased is made from reclaimed wood.

Our table was created out of what looks like thick teak branches that might have fallen to the forest floor, and perhaps part of a tree trunk – hopefully one that had been cut many years in the past.

It has a very irregular shape, but it’s absolutely beautiful.

I don’t have any good photos of it right now, but I’m going to be refinishing the table shortly so I’ll take some before and after photos so you can see how weathered it looks after sitting in my garden through the summer and how I rejuvenate it each year with a coat of danish teak oil.

I just went looking online to see if I could find anything quite like it so I could show you how beautiful my table is, but I was unsuccessful. I can’t believe how hard it was to find anything remotely similar.

Sometime this week I’ll get my sanding paper out and lightly rub down the table with some fine sand paper, clean it off with a tack cloth and then oil it. It’s almost like magic how beautiful the table looks after I give it this treatment that perhaps only takes an hour of my time.

Have you ever refinished furniture that you own? Or perhaps furniture that you’ve purchased used, or at a flea market that needs refinishing before it can really be put to good use?
