The scent of a rose

Can you smell it?

I can.

Of course I know exactly how beautiful this Prince Napoleon rose smells. Just one look at some of my rose photos brings the scent right back to me. Just gazing at this rose makes me feel as if it’s scent surrounds me.

I think next winter I’ll spend some time each day looking at my photographs so I can remind myself of the gardens beauty and scent.

If you grow scented flower you’ll hopefully know exactly what feeling I’m talking about. Once you get that intoxicating scent in your mind it doesn’t fade easily.

I love this rose. It’s a true beauty and so very hardy!

Plants that complement one another

Everyone seems to be enjoying photos of my garden so I thought I would show you a photo of my beautiful Tamukeyama cutleaf Japanese maple and a Hosta Gold Standard.

The rose, with the faded blooms, that you can see behind the hosta is my Compte de Chambord. Possibly the smelliest rose in my garden. When I say smelly I mean most beautifully scented rose.

This photo doesn’t really do the Japanese maple and hosta combo justice. The colors of these two plants are so vibrant and depending upon the light falling on them they can look slightly different at various times of day.

The hosta leaves range from a yellow tinged green to a chartreuse. All hosta’s love shade but this one actually needs a shady area as the leaves are very delicate and can be damaged by bright sun.

At this time of year the Japanese Maple’s leaves are a deep reddish maroon. In the early spring they are a bright light red, and in the fall they are an orangish fiery red. It’s a lovely small ornamental tree.

I think that the two plants complement each other nicely. What do you think?

Rose blooms galore!

Remember about two weeks ago I wrote a post about all the roses in my yard? I told you that they were all in bloom at once and that the scent was heavenly?

I was working bellow the roses in the middle photo planting some new plants when the roses were in full bloom and I ended up being covered in petals. The branches of one of my largest roses, William Baffin, were moving in the light breeze and petals were raining down on me.

I still have roses in bloom but different roses, different colors and different scents now. The lilies are blooming too.

I thought you might enjoy seeing the roses in bloom so here’s a sample from my garden for you to enjoy.
