I’m back from Vegas

Sorry for the lack of posts since Wednesday. I had planned to write regularly while I was in Vegas, but I barely had an internet connection in my hotel so I was unable to make any new posts!

That was such a drag! I was in Vegas for two blogging conventions and ended up with out internet access. How Ironic huh?

Well, I can tell you that the weather was much nicer in Las Vegas than it was here in Toronto while I was away! As our plane took off on Thursday afternoon I noticed what looked like snow flurries hitting the planes window! Ah it was snowing!

Last year you might remember that Vegas had snow in December, A few inches I believe, and we hadn’t even had snow here in Toronto by that time. Quite the change this year!

Las Vegas was a little warmer this past week than it normally is around this time in November. I’d say it averaged about 80 F during the day and low 70’s at night. Very comfortable temperatures since there was really no humidity to speak of at all.

I got home late last night or perhaps you might say early this morning and I already miss the Las Vegas weather. It was raining and cold and just plain gloomy looking outside today! Not inviting at all.

It won’t be long before the cold weather sets in, I’m sure of it.

We still had our patio table and chair set up outside so my husband tried to spend some time outside this afternoon in order to take them apart (they are metal and glass) and store them but he only got the job half done as it started to rain heavily.

Tomorrows supposed to be cool but mainly sunny. Perhaps we’ll get that patio furniture put away tomorrow and if I’m feeling up to it I’d better start working on putting the garden to bed for the winter too!

Talk about strange weather

So far October is shaping up to be more like the end of August or early September temperature wise.

It’s been no less than 10 degrees higher than the average temperatures for this time of year and often a lot higher than that.

This weekend is Thanks Giving here in Canada and the temps are supposed to be close to 30 Celsius each day. That’s the mid 80’s for those of you who are stuck in Fahrenheit.

I remember Thanks Giving weekends when we’ve had snow or when it’s been so cold and rainy that you don’t want to step outside. Luckily most aren’t like that, but neither are most as warm as this one will be.

There’s also been quite a bit of humidity. On Wednesday night I was out with my husband shopping and when we came back to our car at about 8 in the evening the car was blanketed with moisture. It wasn’t cold out so it wasn’t condensation due to temperature change. It was warm and sticky wet humid.

Then, last night at about 6 pm a strange fog descended on the city. You can see photos at BlogTO if you’d like to see how dense the fog was the blanketed the city during daylight hours. The CN tower has clouds at half it’s height! Very strange.

As much as I’m enjoy this strangely warm weather I’m worried that it’s giving my plants the wrong message. How are my roses ever supposed to get the message to stop growing, leaving out and creating new buds if it doesn’t begin to cool down?

Many plants need the gradual cooling of temperatures to signal them to go into dormancy. Without beginning to slow down and become dormant before the harsh cool weather of winter comes along the plants might end up having more winter damage.

Clearing up a few things about Green Thumb Sunday

I’m not sure why, but lately it seems people who want to join Green Thumb Sunday are questioning putting the blogroll on their site.

As it says on the Join Green Thumb Sunday page the blogroll does not have to be in your sidebar. You can put it in a post or on a page (depending on your blogging platform) and link to that page or post from your sidebar.

The blogroll does have to be on your site if you want to be an official member of Green Thumb Sunday. The blogroll helps promote all of our sites to any visitors who happen to be on one of the Green Thumb Sunday members sites. It also easily allows members of Green Thumb Sunday to visit one another on Sundays and through the weeks to see what each member has posted for each Green Thumb Sunday.

How can you participate without knowing who the rest of the members are? Green thumb Sunday is not just about making a post on Sundays, it’s about visiting other gardening and related websites, getting idea’s from what others are doing in their gardens, and I suppose to encourage others in their gardening and landscaping endeavours.

Yes the blogroll is getting long. I knew it eventually would. That’s why I’ve always allowed the members of GTS to put the blogroll on a separate page of their site.

Another thing that looks nice and keeps your sidebars tidy is to roll up the blogroll into an expandable menu. On many of my blogs I use Flooble’s expandable script to roll up my menus, category lists, archives and so on to keep the sidebars tidy. You can customize the look of these expandable menus so that the colors suit your blogs theme too. Try it out if you’d like to.

There’s also been a few people lately who didn’t realize I suppose the blogroll would actually produce a list of blogs on their site. I think that they thought the code I was sending would just be the Green Thumb Sunday logo. The logo is in the email that I send out to people who want to join, but so is the blogroll code. The only thing that you must do in order to get on the list is put the blogroll on your site.

Another misconception that I’ve heard recently is that people think only gardening blogs are participating. Some have hesitated to join because they don’t have a gardening blog and others have decided not to join when they saw that not everyone on the list was a gardening blog.

Let me clear this up. Green Thumb Sunday is open to all. I’d love everyone to participate each Sunday but I realize that you have lives and can’t always do that. Participation is required at least once a month though.

Any kind of blog may join. All that is required is that when you make your Green Thumb Sunday post is that it be a photo of something to do with gardening, nature, wildlife or a landscape. Most people opt to post photos of the plants that they grow in their gardens or even house plants but you do not have to only post photos of plants.

I’d also like to remind all of the members of Green Thumb Sunday that we had a major slow down last winter. Now that it’s summer in the areas where most of our members live I’d like to suggest that you take some extra photos and save some of them for winter. Or during the winter months take some lovely outdoor photos of snow, ice on trees, sunlight sparkling through an icicle … anything like that is perfectly fine. Lets just keep this going through the whole year this year. 🙂
