Shade loving spring flower

I took this photo about two weeks ago.

Unfortunately I can’t remember the name of this plant. It’s a spring flower that for me, only blooms for approximately one week each year. The name is something like pasiflora … but yeah, I know it’s not a pasiflora as it’s certainly not a passion flower.

Whatever it is, it’s a lovely spring flower who’s blooms open fully in the daylight hours and close as the light dims in the late afternoon. I have mine planted in a fairly shady area, so it does well in shade.

This flower is no longer blooming and it’s foliage will die down sometime in the next few weeks as we come into the warm weather of summer.

Hyacinth buds

DSC01754 copy

On Friday, after the scent of blooming hyacinths drew me out of the house I went outside with my camera. There were so many different spring flowers blooming!

I don’t know how many photos I ended up taking but it had to have been at least 50 pictures. I’m so thankful that I have a digital camera as it gives me the ability to take as many photos as I like and discard any that don’t turn out well.

I found this small hyacinth just getting ready to go into bloom. I love how the red tinged mauve buds contrast with the bright green leaves.

This hyacinth does look a little sparse. I’ll have to check on it later today and see if more buds came out. It might be that it’s a new bulb, or one that’s beginning to lose it’s strength. Hyacinth bulbs don’t always have the longest lifespan.

Delicate Chionodoxa blooms

Chionodoxa

DSC01668

Last Saturday, when I surveyed my garden, only a few flowers were blooming. The crocus were still blooming, but they’ve since stopped, and the lovely blue iris, and the hellebore that I showed you earlier this week was blooming as well. The only other flower that had made an arrival was the Chionodoxa.

Chionodoxa are delicate spring flowers. I have bluish purple ones as shown above, white ones and pink ones. Of course the only once that had made an appearance were the purple ones. Most were not yet open.

Now, one week later, the garden is alive with green leaves and flower buds. I think all of the Chionodoxa are blooming, and so are some of the hyacinths and daffodils. I must admit that I haven’t gone out to take a close look so there could be a few other nice surprises.

I did have one tulip blooming in my front boulevard garden bed, but it met an untimely end. I’m telling that story over at Tricia’s Musings.
