I’m neglecting my garden

The last time I was in the garden doing any work was more than a week ago. I tidied up the front garden beds and really meant to get to the backyard to finish the half that I had left to trim, prune and fix up, but I just haven’t got back there to do it.

Last weekend, not this one, last weekend we even went to a garden center and I bought some Tomato plants, cucumbers and a lot of other veggies as well as a few annuals to plant. Have I do anything with them other than water them three times? Nope!

I’ve just not been feeling well enough to get out there and get the work done.

It’s a shame really. The plants are surviving without me, but I know if I got out there and trimmed the dead wood off the rose, and pruned them into shape it would help stimulate them and make then grow a whole lot more. Also … I’d rather work with them now to shape them before they grow too much as it will be harder job and uh … more dangerous to my skin as they get bigger and fuller.

since I have more than 60 roses it’s quite interesting to take a look at my hands and arms after I’ve been working with them. I wear gloves but the thorns sometimes punch right through the gloves. I’ll come in after an hour or two of pruning and I’ll have scratches from the roses all the way up to my shoulders, or well … pretty close!

Garden 2003

Here’s another view of my garden from 2003. This photo was taken just a little further down the garden bed than the last picture that I posted yesterday.

In this photo you can see the poppy heads, asiatic lily, gladiola, red poppy, beebalm, a different type of delphinium than in the first photo, nicotina, marigolds, pansies and tomatoes near the end of the row.  I think there might be some cosmo greenery and buds between the red poppies and the beebalm as well.

I love my crowded little garden but it has to go to bed soon.  It’s getting quite cold here now.

Prolific garden

How’s your garden doing?

My garden is quite prolific at the moment. I have 4 cherry tomato plants producing little red gems daily, and then there’s the cucumbers, I must have 4 that are just about ready to pick. My green beans are doing well too. Yummy fresh picked beans.

My tomato plants have still not produced any tomatoes, not even green ones. I started them late and I will never do that again. I’m pretty sure that I won’t get any tomatoes from them this year because they probably be green and just old enough to start ripening when it begins to get too cool for them.

The strawberries have continuously been pushing out crop after crop of berries, and the raspberries are producing their second round. I think I might make some pies and jams.

Almost all of the flowers are blooming. It would probably be easier to tell you what’s not blooming rather than what is. My four o clocks are finally blooming. They were slow to start up this year. I’ll have to make sure I collect some seeds from them this year so that I have fresh seeds for next year. I think the seeds I used this year were too old. I really love my white four o’clocks because they put out a scent very similar to jasmine. The garden is intoxicating when they are blooming in the evening. I’ve missed that most of this summer.

We did finally get some rain but there hasn’t been much so far. I’m hoping that we’ll get a few good showers soon.
