A lovely early Spring

by Tricia

I haven’t been writing in this blog very much recently. Life has a way of getting in the way and in my case it got in the way BIG TIME. I don’t think that’s going to end anytime soon, and it’s affect my writing in all of my blogs, but I’m going to try to write more.

I do want to remind my readers that I have another gardening blog that I hope to write in regularly as well. It’s called Organic Gardening Tips and as the name implies it’s about organic gardening. As I’ve mentioned in many of my posts on this blog I don’t use chemicals or synthetic fertilizers on my garden beds. I use organic materials so I suppose this blog is also an organic gardening blog as well.

In other news – my garden is doing very well this spring! I don’t think that I lost any roses this year. It was a very warm winter with barely any snow here in Toronto. So warm in fact that my roses started to leaf out in mid March! I’ve never seen that happen before. They usually don’t start getting leaves or even turning green until mid April or even later.

Everything is growing and I’d say that my garden is at least 1.5 months ahead of itself. My Crocuses, Glories of the Snow, Snow Drops, Hyacinths and the first of the Daffodils are just about done now. I’m waiting to see what will bloom next.

How is your garden doing this lovely Spring?

Winter’s here

by Tricia

It’s official. So much for the balmy weather we’ve enjoyed through all of December and a good portion of January. Since last Monday, a week and a half ago, winter has been here in Toronto and it doesn’t look like it’s going to go away any time soon.

This week is colder than last. It’s -11(12..2 F) right now and tomorrow night it’s going to go down to -21 c (-5.8 F)! That’s darn cold! Brrr! I’m lucky in some ways that I don’t have to go out. I’m sick at home and I don’t have any more appointments this week so I can just stay inside and hope that my furnace keeps working.

How’s the weather in your area? A number of people that were also enjoying unseasonably warm weather this winter have also said that in the last week the cold weather descended on them as well.

Is it still warmer than average anywhere where it should be quite cold by now?

Warm January

ice cave 2

Last January, Toronto, Ashbridges Bay area, The Beach.

This was an snow and ice cave that the waves crashing onto the beach helped form.

See the snow? yeah, we actually had snow last year in January.

This year, there’s only been a scant amount that’s melted almost as soon as it’s fallen. What a difference! BTW this photo goes with the one I have on Tricia’s Musings today, that post has more info about our unseasonably warm winter- so far.

Purple Hyacinth

This weeks a little cooler. Actually it’s going to be cooler than it was even in December.

However it’s still no where near as cool as it normally is in January. That’s why I’m also posting a photo of a lovely purple Hyacinth for you today. I’m beginning to think that my spring flowers will come up in late February or March rather than April and May when they usually arrive.

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.
