Strange weather

Wow, the weather switches around here from one day to the next!

On Sunday it was extremely hot and humid. This of course was thanks to the warm weather blowing in, in advance of the remnants of Hurricane Ike. Late in the evening it became quite windy and the rain came – not as much rain as they were predicting luckily.   The wind cooled everything down and so far this week (Mon, Tues) it’s been cooler than it normally should be at this time of year.

It’s so strange to go from tropical temperatures to very cool temperatures all within the span of 24 hours. I wonder what our plants think of all the changes in the weather?

Autumn garden maintenance

It’s only September, but it feels like both autumn and winter are fast approaching. If the weathermen are correct we are in for an early winter this year. How depressing is that?

Here in Toronto the days and evenings are already getting cooler. I know we still might get some nice warm weather, but as I said above it sure seems like winter is just around the corner as it’s usually quite nice and pleasantly warm around here in early September.

Perhaps it’s time to start thinking about maintaining and preparing the garden for autumn? If you do a little bit at a time now, there’ll be less to do if winter suddenly rears up it’s ugly head!

Peach colored aster

This lovely peach colored flower is growing within the asters that I planted in June. I think it’s an Aster as well, but it’s quite a bit different than all of the rest of the asters that I’m growing.

Purple asters

It seems like my asters are blooming earlier this year. I guess that’s due all the cool weather we had in July and the first two weeks or so of August. I think my Asters have been blooming for at least two weeks, maybe three.

Asters usually bloom well into Autumn – I hope that mine do this year considering their early start.

Do you grow asters in your garden for some fall color? I have several shades ranging from a bluish purple, to mauve, pink, and a deep rose. Oh and the peachy colored one above too!
