Strange weather

by Tricia

Wow, the weather switches around here from one day to the next!

On Sunday it was extremely hot and humid. This of course was thanks to the warm weather blowing in, in advance of the remnants of Hurricane Ike. Late in the evening it became quite windy and the rain came – not as much rain as they were predicting luckily.   The wind cooled everything down and so far this week (Mon, Tues) it’s been cooler than it normally should be at this time of year.

It’s so strange to go from tropical temperatures to very cool temperatures all within the span of 24 hours. I wonder what our plants think of all the changes in the weather?

Have you had strange weather in your area in the last few days?

Flowers of Spring

Purple Crocus

My garden is still blanketed in a heavy coat of snow. There’s perhaps two or two and a half feet of snow across my whole backyard including the garden beds. I’m actually happy about that.

Why? Well most winters around here it snows a little bit and then it warms up, the snow melts, then it gets really cold and my poor little plants are left to bare the cold naked without any cover. Well baring any leaves that we might have piled onto the beds in the fall.

Daffodil Now underneath all that snow my plants are hibernating. They’re insulated from the freezing winter winds.

I’m sure it won’t last much longer. We’re bound to get some warmer weather soon and with luck it will just keep warming up.

Some of the first flowers to emerge when the snow melts away will be the Crocus’. They’re beautiful spring flowers. I love how they open in the sun and as the afternoon goes by and the sun loses it’s strength each flower slowly closes until it’s petals touch. Crocus blooms will last for about five or so days, opening and closing each day.

As much as I hate all the snow we have I know it’s there for a reason. It’s protecting my garden. Soon though, it will be time for those first flowers of spring.

I love this weather

by Tricia

The weather’s been so nice hear in Toronto lately that it’s almost felt like spring!

My husband and I just got back in from taking our Labrador Retriever puppy out for a walk around the neighborhood. Now it’s only 1 Celsius out, just about freezing – but there’s no wind at all and it felt much warmer to me than it really was. We had quite and enjoyable walk!

Earlier today my husband went outside and raked up all the leaves that have blown into our back garden and front yard. The garden beds now have an extra inch or so of leaves covering them to give them a bit of winter protection when it turns cold again. Surely it will be cold again soon! I think we’re expecting snow tomorrow in fact. Although the weather is supposed to be around freezing or just above all week so more than likely any snow that falls will melt rather quickly.

And here I thought we were going to have a brutal winter! Perhaps I shouldn’t speak too soon.

How is winter in your area? Is your garden buried under snow or are you having spring like conditions?
