My snowy garden

Well I can’t say that my garden looks like that much right now, but some of the plants that have a dusting of snow look lovely.

The snow dusted branches above are from my rose Theresa Bugnet. It’s a very hardy rugosa type rose. It’s branches turn a deep crimson red in the winter and as you can see it looks lovely after a snow storm.

We have three dwarf mugo pine in the front walk between our neighbors house and ours (we live in a semi-detached house) and when it snows they get a lovely coating of snow too that stays on their branches often for a few days.

Can you tell that it snowed over the weekend?

Do you have photos of your garden in the off season? Perhaps snow covered plants or frosted flowers?

BTW my post is a bit late today because our internet and cable went down late last night and didn’t come back on again until an hour or two ago! Grrrr

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.

I love this weather

by Tricia

The weather’s been so nice hear in Toronto lately that it’s almost felt like spring!

My husband and I just got back in from taking our Labrador Retriever puppy out for a walk around the neighborhood. Now it’s only 1 Celsius out, just about freezing – but there’s no wind at all and it felt much warmer to me than it really was. We had quite and enjoyable walk!

Earlier today my husband went outside and raked up all the leaves that have blown into our back garden and front yard. The garden beds now have an extra inch or so of leaves covering them to give them a bit of winter protection when it turns cold again. Surely it will be cold again soon! I think we’re expecting snow tomorrow in fact. Although the weather is supposed to be around freezing or just above all week so more than likely any snow that falls will melt rather quickly.

And here I thought we were going to have a brutal winter! Perhaps I shouldn’t speak too soon.

How is winter in your area? Is your garden buried under snow or are you having spring like conditions?

Green Thumb Sunday over the Holidays

by Tricia

I just wanted to let all GTS members know that those of you who are around and able to blog on Sunday December 23rd and Sunday December 30th are welcome to participate in Green Thumb Sunday.

Since neither of the Sundays fall on an actual holiday date we’ll continue as normal.

I do realize that some of you might be out of town for the holidays or might have a house full of guests. So if you are not able to make your regular GTS post during this time that’s fine.

A tip – if your blogging platform allows you to post date your posts you could make a GTS post in advance and just post date it to the 23rd or 30th of December so that it will automatically post for you. I know WordPress has the ability to post date posts (just be sure to save it as published with a future date and it will automatically post on the date and time you set) and I’m sure some of the other popular blogging platforms have this ability as well.

As for the rest of the winter months … I noticed last year that some GTS members slowed down in their postings over the cool months of winter. Please remember that picture of your garden in the winter can be just as beautiful as pictures of your garden and plants during the growing season. Landscapes, older photos of your garden or plants, and photos of house plants are also welcome during this time. So keep on posting!

I must also apologize for my lack of regular posts over the last month or so. I’ve been quite ill and on top of that I have a new sick puppy at home. We got her on November 23rd and she’s been sick since we got her. As a result I’ve had to cut down on my blogging as it takes quite a bit of my time caring for her and treating her various ailments. Hopefully things will return to near normal soon!
