{"id":3986,"date":"2012-11-01T14:12:21","date_gmt":"2012-11-01T18:12:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/feverishthoughts.com\/garden\/?p=3986"},"modified":"2015-04-26T04:11:08","modified_gmt":"2015-04-26T08:11:08","slug":"only-gardening-dabbling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/feverishthoughts.com\/garden\/2012\/11\/01\/only-gardening-dabbling\/","title":{"rendered":"Only gardening dabbling"},"content":{"rendered":"<!--CusAds--><p>At this time of year (north of the Tropic of Cancer anyway) gardening usually slows down.\u00c2\u00a0 This is not without its compensations.\u00c2\u00a0 Keeping up does become less hectic.\u00c2\u00a0 Still, most of us do not want to really hibernate so what do we do to keep the show rolling forward?<\/p>\n<p>For those of us with a large garden there is always something to do even it is just trying to keep it tidy by gathering up leaves and broken branches.\u00c2\u00a0 This is also the time of year to put most of any new spring bulbs into the ground.\u00c2\u00a0 For those of us with a small garden or a balcony a little thought can go a long way.\u00c2\u00a0 At this time of year we tend to be short of fresh items.\u00c2\u00a0 Growing a few herbs can do so much to liven up a meal without much effort.\u00c2\u00a0 Some of the hardier items can still be kept out of doors but others really must be kept indoors.\u00c2\u00a0 One word of caution, be very wary of bringing pots indoors if they have been left outside.\u00c2\u00a0 Insects tend to leave eggs in and around food that we like to eat.\u00c2\u00a0 Once the eggs come into the warmth they hatch and the resulting plague can be most unwelcome!\u00c2\u00a0 Of course going the other way has fewer problems and one really has to be wary of the frost in the spring.<\/p><!--CusAds-->\n<p>One can have a splash of colour very cheaply by planting <a title=\"Pansies\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pansy\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"ext-link\">pansies<\/a>, roses, <a title=\"gardenias\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gardenia\" target=\"_blank\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"ext-link\">gardenias<\/a> or azaleas, in containers with compost out of doors.\u00c2\u00a0 These items can easily be obtained from your nearest gardening centre or even your local florist.\u00c2\u00a0 Throw in some cheap spring bulbs such as narcissus or daffodils and one can have a boost of colour just as the other plants are beginning to fade.<\/p>\n<p>One can be a real enthusiast and start from seeds but if you are starting out it is more reliable to buy seedlings.\u00c2\u00a0 Nowadays just about every supermarket sells growing herbs such as parsley and basil which are beyond the seedling stage in pots.\u00c2\u00a0 If one wants the plant to keep on growing through the winter one should \u00e2\u20ac\u0153pot up\u00e2\u20ac\u009d into larger containers with good quality compost.\u00c2\u00a0 The plants should thrive on that for a few weeks if they are watered and have sufficient light but if you want them to thrive into the New Year and beyond you will have to give them some fertiliser.\u00c2\u00a0 Do harvest quite often as this helps the plant bring forth fresh growth.\u00c2\u00a0 Uncut and some of them will become a bit stringy.\u00c2\u00a0 With a bit of luck the plants will still be healthy at the end of spring and can be put into the ground outdoors for the summer!<\/p>\n<!--CusAds--><p>Article written by London Florist &#8211;
