Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2009 Concert

This years 25th anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concerts was one of those shows that you wish that you had taken in! Both shows this year took place on Oct 29-30 at Madison Square Garden in New York city.

For Thursday’s show, the line up and set list was unreal! On Friday the line up was just as impressive!

There were far too many acts for me to single out which one that really got my attention but the best act that I saw on line was Stevie Wonder and Jeff Beck playing superstition! God those boys still ROCK!

If most of you like myself, who were not one of the many lucky ones in attendance at either show, it will on HBO U.S. in between Nov. 30, 2009 – Jan. 03, 2010 and HBO Canada in between Nov. 9th to Dec. 30th 2009 in HD. I just programed my PVR right now!

So did anyone out there check out either show in New York?

New Police biography called Walking on the Moon

Saying that the Police were a huge 1980’s band is an understatement. The British band brought us great tunes and rocky stories about the interactions of the band members. Over the years I’ve been interested in some of these legionary battles between the guys in the band. Then today I found a Police Biography that sounds intriguing called Walking on the Moon, by British journalist Chris Campion.

The author Chris Campion brings to us a complete and comprehensive accounts on the band and their music. He bases his conclusions on new interviews with people that were closest to the band in their heyday. In his extensive research, Chris traces the group and its members from their earliest days to the Police’s unfortunate demise. Walking on the Moon also includes 26 black-and-white photographs of the band. I, for one, love black and whites over colour any day of the week!

I think that I am one of only few Police lovers out there that did not see the band live. The Police Picnic was one of those must see events, that said by the lucky ones who attended them. Even my little sister saw them twice!

The only Police tune that I ever played in Pylis was Walking on the Moon, now wonder the name of the book caught my attention! That great reggae feel to the song was intoxicating to not only myself but to most of our audience! Man that was a great one to play.

So has anyone out there had the chance to check the book out? Has anyone read any other Police band biography that they liked that they could recommend?

This may make for a great Christmas present for the big Police fan on your list.

BTO founders being sued

The driving force behind BTO (Bachman-Turner Overdrive), Randy Bachman and Fred Turner, is now being sued by it’s remaining member’s. The former band mates, Robin Bachman and Blair Thornton, are suing the pair for using their own names.

After the group broke up in 1977, the lawsuit claims Randy Bachman and Turner signed away the rights to the BTO name to their two former bandmates and agreed not to use the Bachman-Turner Overdrive name without the consent of the other parties.

The lawsuit states that Randy Bachman and Turner signed two further deals in 1984 and 2002, saying they wouldn’t use the Bachman-Turner Overdrive name in connection to new recordings and live performances. CTV

The 1970’s Supergroup, made some great music back in the day. Randy and Fred were the brains behind the collection of musicians and I think that they should be able to use the name that they branded. I know the law is against them but when does common sense come into play in something like this? That’s all I have to say.

Will George W. Bush finally Give Peace a Chance?

George W. Bush is going to talk about his days in the old White house. That’s nice and all but his speech will be taking place in the same Montreal hotel where John Lennon and Yoko were asking everyone who would listen to them to give peace a chance? I know, this can’t be right but it is! This story is just so weird and ironic that I can’t find the words to describe it properly.

Didn’t someone think about the mockery, not to mention the humour, that would come with using a venue like this for such a purpose? Think what happened there at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel 40 years ago and what it was all really about. Doesn’t Bush have some PR person who looks out for his image? God’s that’s funny … I think?

This article from The Canadian Press by Andy Blatchford, really caught my eye and I just wanted to share it with you all.

So what do you think about the irony of this one? Is it just me or am I just blowing this event out of proportion? Enjoy!

Woman who inspired song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds dies at 46

A childhood friend of John Lennon’s son Julian, was the girl who was really behind the song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds from the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album!

Lucy Vodden is her name and she was a very important person in Musical history. Unfortunately she passed away this past Tuesday in a London England hospital. She had a long battle with lupus and was 46 years of age.

Vodden’s connection to the Beatles dates back to her early days, when she made friends with schoolmate Julian Lennon, John Lennon’s son.

Julian Lennon, then four years old, came home from school with a drawing one day, showed it to his father, and said it was “Lucy in the sky with diamonds.”

I just found this story today and thought wow, is that really what the song is about!!! I like most people today thought that the song was about LSD trips! It a little bit of Beatles trivia that I found neat!

The Danforth Music Hall is 90 years young

The Danforth Music Hall in Toronto has just celebrated it’s 90th year of operations in my neighbourhood. It’s one of those great buildings that you drive by every day, but are not aware of it’s importance to the area. It’s seen it’s ups and downs over the years and now it’s time to place it in it’s proper place in history!

Originally this great gal on the Danforth was called the Allen Theatre Chain. Back in the day they referred to it as a grand “photo-play palace.” The Theatre chain was owed by Julie and John J. Allen.

This grand venue was home to both Vaudeville and theatrical acts as well as silent movies, which were accompanied by live piano. It has a single screen, holds multiple types of events, has 1800 seats and has been use in many movie scenes. To name just a few of the feature films shot there were Chicago, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, (Studio) 54, Bulletproof Monk and some scenes of My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Their first theatre was in Brantford Ontario. In 1920 Julie and John J. Allen returned to Brantford and bought the now Sanderson Centre. After remodeling and redecorating it was opened on February 2, 1920 as the Allen Theatre.

Then the location changed hands in about 1929 and was called Century Theatre. They kept the inside and outside look of the building pretty much as the original.

Some of the past acts that performed at the historic Danforth Theatre & Concert Hall in the 80s and 90s were The Police, Bruce Cockburn, James Brown, Duran Duran, Pat Benatar, Tom Waits, Barenaked Ladies, The Tea Party and Blue Rodeo just to name a few.

I’ve only witnessed two events there, Amos Lee and Rick Wakeman. Both shows were great, the sound was beautiful, the hall itself was majestic and the seats were GREAT!

So here is to the old Danforth Music Hall and many more years to come!

Trivia about Vigilants

This is just a little post about some good old buddies of mine from the band Vigilants that came out of Brantford Ontario way back in the 80’s!

I’ve been doing a stay-cation this year and I was just searching for topics to write about, here on this blog. Today I was going through the Canadian Pop Encyclopedia website and I happen to some across a listing for Vigilants! It’s great to see that friends will be remembered for their hard work in the future in this way. Hats off to you guys!

A 4-piece hard rock act from Brantford, The Vigilants won Q107’s annual Homegrown contest and used the money to record their EP ‘Run For Cover’.

The record featured guest vocals by Lee Aaron who also appeared in the video.

I know some of you have seen this old video of the band, especially on Facebook(thanx Domenic for the video link!) but I just wanted to show some of you who haven’t, enjoy!

Glastonbury Festival

The Glastonbury Festival is something I’ve never heard of before.

This sounds like one of the best musical weekends one could ever imagine!

It started in 1970 and hasn’t looked back. In 1971 the lineup was Hawkwind, Traffic, Melanie, David Bowie, Joan Baez and Fairport Convention. Attendance: estimated at 12,000. Price: free. At the 1982 show the acts were Van Morrison, Judie Tzuke, Jackson Browne, Roy Harper, Richie Havens. Attendance: 25,000. Tickets: £8. Then in 1985 Echo & The Bunnymen, Aswad, Joe Cocker, Style Council and The Boomtown Rats. Attendance was 40,000,Tickets: £16. Now that’s not a bad line up!

They even made a documentary called Glastonbury Fayre (1972). Watching the trailer looks like it was going to be one of those weekends, don’t ya know, nudge, nudge, wink, wink?! The band Fairport Convention looked great. These guys are still around believe it or not.

Has any of my readers here been to this festival? I’d love to know if it’s well worth the price to get there?!

Was Jimi Hendrix murdered my his manager?

We all seem to, in today’s modern society, gravitate to the tabloid stories. I for one, try my best to ignore this form of journalism, but it does make one wonder about this particular story. I realize I’m adding to it’s buzz on-line, but this story caused me to react to this type hype that I am referring to above.

Was Jimi Hendrix murdered my his manager? Well I’m not sure because I wasn’t there when it happened.

James “Tappy” Wright a roadie for Jimi, claims that Michael Jeffrey, Jimi’s former manager “drunkenly confessed to killing” Hendrix. He reportedly says that he killed him “by stuffing pills into his mouth and washing them down with several bottles of red wine.”

The latest information is from a new book called Rock Roadie. Why did he wait so long to bring this to anybodies attention?

It’s definitely plausible: Michael Jeffrey “has always been a controversial figure,” and he’s “been accused by members of the Animals and Jimi Hendrix’s family of cheating them of earnings.”

If this is true, should there be a formal investigation to this tragedy? Should we just leave it along? Hasn’t the Hendrix family suffered enough? Which conspiracy formula do you subscribe to?

So my question to you, my great readership is, do we really care about this form of newz/entertainment if you can actually call it that?

Buffalo Auditorium’s last stand

The Buffalo Auditorium was just a beautiful building. They are demolishing it and making it into a parking lot! As in Joni Mitchel’s song, They paved paradise and put up a parking lot. The pictures says it all.

Some many unforgettable events were held there. I know you just have to ask Chris Noto about it and he’ll have tons of stories for you! Sorry about your loss there buddy!

Many sports teams called it their home.

Buffalo Bisons of the American Hockey League, the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League, the Buffalo Braves of the National Basketball Association, the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Soccer League, the Buffalo Bandits of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League, the Buffalo Blizzard of the second National Professional Soccer League, and the Buffalo Stampede of Roller Hockey International. It also held a number an NCAA basketball games, as well as numerous entertainment events, such as concerts, the Ringling Brothers circus, Disney on Ice, and other things of that nature.

It held some fabulous other shows as well. The Aud. held shows by major acts such as The Grateful Dead. Some say the grand old lady helped produce the bands greatest shows ever! The Who, The Stones, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Neil Young and David Bowie are just a few of the greatest bands to play within it’s walls.

So here is a final salute to the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium “The Aud” and let us keep her in out hearts!
