Woofstock

June 9, 2008 by Chris

Woofstock is North America’s Largest festival for dogs. It’s held in Toronto on June 7th – 8th in the downtown core. “The summer of canine Love” is a good way to describe it! 140,000 people can’t be wrong!

My wife, Midnight our black lab and myself just came back from this crazy event and what a blast it was! They blocked off a fairly large area of streets in Toronto and it was informative and tons of fun!

There were so many people and their dogs all over the place.

The vendors had great freebees and the products were top shelf stuff! There was even this company called Happy Tails that have a Pet Resort & Pet Camp in the very popular Muskoka area.

Our guests have the freedom to come and go as they please between open pet-sized bedrooms or cabins, fireplace lounge and one of many large dog parks segregated by size and temperament. They can run and play all day, chasing chipmunk and dragonflies, hunting frogs, swimming, and umpteen other things dogs being dogs like to do.

There is also a human equivalent called the Deerhurst Resort not too far away as well. There is no connection between the two but it’s nice to have the best of both worlds right next to each other. If we had more dollars then sense, then I think we’d be there!

The best thing I we took out of this event was the ability to bring our dog right inside a very respectable pub for a couple of Guinesses! Cheers, a little hair of the dog won’t kill ya! Hope to see you there next year, drop me a line and we’ll buy the first round, really!

Keep on Jammin’

Is Disco really Back

May 27, 2008 by Chris

Well maybe it’s time to pull out the old sequined hot pants, 12-inch records, mirror balls and platform shoes from where ever you saw them last? Is Disco really back or is it just a pipe dream?

The record labels and the so-called people in the know and says it is back! Should we listen and be very afraid OR should we embrace this as a long lost, more then mis-understood cousin? I have mixed feelings.

satnitefever1.jpg

Ever since disco started up, I kept listening for some crazy guitarist to jump in and blow me away. but I was just left hanging … for quite a while! Being as nieve back then as I was, I sorta was looking for a different style to come out of no where to bring to my arsenal of techniques to use when I was playing with different bands. The Rolling Stones started to jump on this bandwagon with their disco version of “Miss You”, but they fell far too short of my expectations.

I realize that the point of music is to sooth the savage beast in all of us. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, or so they say. But the most important thing that we have to recognize and acknowledge about any genre of music that it has the proper end result, is someone actually enjoying it?

Way back in the day, (back when I got hit by a school bus, true story here kidz) I had a buddy of mine whose parents had more dollars then sense and they gave their kids basically anything they wanted. Now this is where it gets scary, disco was all the rage and my buddy asked his parents to get a dance floor like Saturday Night Fever and guess what … they did! This thing was 1/4 the size of the dance floor of the above mentioned movie with the lights under the floor, attached to this light organ thingy with 1000 watt speakers to boot! It was really impressive and yes, I did the line thing at least once or twice … I think?

discoball.jpg

The matriarchs of disco and both crowned “Queen of Disco”, Donna Summers and Gloria Gaynor are both coming out with new disco music for June and I guess that will help get the ball, or should I say disco ball rolling!

So tell us if you are FOR or AGAINST the return of DISCO into our lives. Was once enough or is it something old is something new?

Inventor of LSD dies

May 18, 2008 by Chris

Albert Hofmann, the man behind LSD, has died! I honestly just found out this morning!

No I wasn’t getting small or something like that, I’ve just been too busy over the past couple of months doing lots of things!

He says that the developed LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide-25) as a porthole into the mind. This drug/treatment was to allow patients to seek out what was troubling them thus, helping focus the treatments to be used to help what ails them.

ialberthofmann.jpg In his books he tell of his own experimentation with it, but says “LSD can help open your eyes,” he once said. “But there are other ways — meditation, dance, music, fasting.” Now he tells me!

Lots of other people jumped on the olde LSD thing, but their end results were a bit different. Like this guy! Ah, Timothy Leary’s (L)eague of (S)piritual (D)evelopment. Imagine actually meeting this guy. Better yet, can you think of who better to go camping with then him? Huh?

Some other notables are Carry Grant, the Beatles … the list goes on and on.

So let’s take out hats off for a moment and reflect on the great pharmacist Albert Hofmann’s accomplishments.

Keep on Jammin’ Albert, where ever you are!

So who is and isn’t a musician here

April 17, 2008 by Chris

I was just wondering to myself today about how many of you, my good readership, are musicians and who isn’t. I’d like to know for a number of reasons. No, this is not to embarrass anyone or start some kind of mid evil Inquisition folks.

It’s just to:

(1) to tailor topics.
(2) and concentrate on certain categories

Just a simple answer would do here folks, nothing earth shattering.

You could state “Musician” or “Non-Musician”. What instruments you play and maybe what type of gear you have. If your a “non-Musician”, then tell us what genre of music gets you going! If you have any interesting or entertaining events might be good for a laugh, I know we all have 1 or 2 of them up our sleeves!

So state your case and get back to us … we’re waiting!

I’m going to rake the snow off the yard now

March 30, 2008 by Chris

Why have us Canadians been so cranky lately? Well it all has to do with the over abundance of white stuff all over the place. Ok some of you guys in the US, yes we’ll include you as well!

We’ve had it up to here, I mean the height of our glacier on our front yard, with all that blowing snow and cold temperatures stuff! For crying out loud, yesterday we took the dog for a walk at Cherry Beach in Toronto and we thought it was warm out, it was only 1 (C)!!! Lucky for us this is about a 10 minute drive from out house.

All we want is to go out to an outdoor patio, ones that don’t mind our puppy too much, and have a drink and something to eat relax and plus bath in the warmth of the sun.

What did we do to you Mother Nature to have you soooo pissed off at us? Please reply back soon!

You know it’s cold when

February 10, 2008 by Chris

… the dog rings her “outside bell” at the door to go out for her … daily constitution … but then refuses to go out in the cold!

freezing.jpg

I realize that it’s not as cold here as it is in some parts of this great country we call Canada, but my God -22 C minus 7.6 (Fahrenheit) is not exactly twisting by the pool weather either!

Our NOT so little puppy Midnight, is just such a well adjusted dog at home when she is with us. She doesn’t bark all that much, but when she has to go outside she just stands at the door looking at us to pick up on it. We’ve tried to get her to make some sort of noise, but she just sits there patiently wanting out. When we told her obedience instructor about this (BTW, she just successfully graduated from Puppy Training classes this past Friday night) he had an idea!

He told us to get a bird bell and attach it somewhere near the front door then train her to touch the bell with her nose thus making a sound to alert us to her wishes. It took a while, but she does this now and it honestly works! Just a short while ago she went up to the bell and rang it. I then went to put her leash on and opened the door outside for her to do her thing. After opening the screen door to let her out, a huge gust of wind greeted us and she backed away from the door. I wish that I had the video camera running to catch it on film because she was thinking the exact thing that I was at the same time!

I hope that Wiarton Willie, our famous Ontario Ground Hog, as seen here on youtube is right this time around!

keep on Jammin’

This just in, last night it finally reached a balmy -31 (C) or -23 (F)

The PATH in Toronto

February 3, 2008 by Chris

I was downtown the other day and we ran into the hidden gem for all tourists to use in the winter time. We haven’t used this way for years and I just wanted to share it with you all.

Like most cities that have cold/snowy weather during the winter, you have to deal with the slush and snow while traversing through the core. This really can put a damper on your experience here. So in the early 1900’s our forefathers came up with this fairly new concept on building a underground city to keep you spirits warm and dry. I know that this sounds like some bad sci-fi movie idea, but it works great!

It started out around the landmark Eaton Centre then other locations started to jump on board with this fabulous idea. Then a 1988 reform in city council decided to scale back this idea. After this, developers had to give way to their tenants cries to have their locations attached to this revolutionary way of shopping. This gave way to the rise in land value of the property making the developers owners of the most valuable pieces of property in the country.

According to Guinness World Records, PATH is the largest underground shopping complex in the world with 371,600 square metres (27 km.)of retail space. The PATH also holds the bragging rights to the worlds largest side walk sale! It’s even bigger then the whole size of the West Edmonton Mall. If you’ve ever been there then you get the idea. Soon, they say, it will cover around 60 kilometers underneath the downtown area.

If you ever come to Toronto for a visit, check out the official PATH site and print out a copy, it’ll be one of the best things you did if you come here!

Toronto Roofing Industry

January 20, 2008 by Chris

While my brother was here from Chicago visiting this past summer, we all bumped into a mutual friend of ours from our elementary school days and his wife! It was great to caught up with what is going on with each other’s lives and share a pint or two over dinner!

We met up at the Balmy Beach Club, members only and sat out on the patio! It’s right on the beach front in the “Beach area” near our home.

Out in front of us on the patio there are these little break water islands around 75 feet from the shore.

My brother and I saw that our buddy seemed bummed out so we asked him what is was that we could do to brighten up his day. His response was something like “why don’t you two swim out to those break water islands and show us what your made of.” So we did!

IMG_0743

As it turned out it was just a little tried from working too hard with his company Toronto Roofing industries.

The guy was always a perfectionist and was always looking at ways to improve what ever he did. One thing that I can say about Tim is that he always did his homework! He also came over to the house that we were going to buy and he did a quick visual on the roof and was bang on the money. He told us about when the roof was done, the overall structure of it and some tiny little faults in it that was easy for us to fix! Good eye Tim, you should of been a jeweler!

Keep on Jammin’ Tim!

Taking Guitar Lessons

December 12, 2007 by Chris

If your a guitar player who thinks that he or she knows it all, then you should just skip this post! Also, this post is VERY LONG as well!

Every once in a long while I come across a guitar player who thinks that they know it all. I think that we’ve all met a person like this who fits the category? I understand that in order to be a great player you have to have this invincible attitude or ego to obtain these lofty goals but come on, you can’t know everything. There is always someone out there that knows something that you don’t.

In my younger days, there were moments when I had this type of footprint attached to my persona. Sometimes upon entering a Brantford music store some musicians put down what ever they were playing and looked at it as if they didn’t know what this thing was that they had in their hands. Sometimes at a party or other social event guitarists would not play while I was playing or afterwards for that matter. This I thought was good for my ego, but later on I realized that we all were doing was just cheating ourselves out of a learning experience. After not playing for many years, I started to understand this problem.

While living in a dorm/frat house I started to play with many levels of musicians. I realized that some had these guitarists were playing these great little progressions that I had never heard of before and it spurred on my thirst for more musical knowledge. I made great efforts to stunt my level of playing and let other people shine. This approach made others relax and play without intimidation.

Fast forward to today, I think that it is time for me to take lessons again, not to figure out songs/styles but for technique. I know proper positioning, how to change chords efficiently, but I could use some work on understanding progressions better.

Another area is finger picking.

My classical picking is now at the level of a hack, but I can achieve the action and dexterity that I need to pull off a song or style without any noticeable problems. The classical stance is something that I do not use to any great extent but it does come in handy once in a long while. The real problem is with my thumb drone or an alternating bass picking style. The easiest way to understand this is to imagine a piano. You have the left hand working the bass or lower notes and the right hand doing the phrasing/melody. In guitar, your thumb is the bass and the rest of your fingers are the right hand playing the phrasing/melody.

Bruce Cockburn is the master of this in my eyes! It’s almost impossible to pigeon toe his style into one word but this is one of his many fortes. The best example of this is one Going to the Country which I have been trying to finger out or master for many years. I wish that the intro to the song was there to introduce to you to what I mean about his playing ability.

So now I am toying with the idea of taking lessons at the 12th Fret by a gentleman call Dave Martin. He specializes in picking, he loves the some style of picking that I do and best of all he has the same length of fingers that I have. While talking to him, he told me that he has come up against the same playing/technique problems that I have so it would be nice to have someone who has similar issues in this area.

They charge around $22.50 a 1/2 hour so I’ll try him out for a bit and see how it works out! I’ll get back to you later on the results and besides, he probably knows something that I don’t!
