How Can Ambitious Musicians Find Great Advice From Professionals?

July 1, 2013 by Chris

While becoming a success in any occupation is difficult, the music industry is notorious for being one of the toughest to ‘crack.’ Of course, the industry itself isn’t actually that tough anymore.

In the days before social media and polarizing television talent shows, becoming a success was dependent on someone at a record label listening to your tape, or having the good fortune to be playing a venue where someone with influence just happened to be having a drink that night.

Easier Yet More Difficult

GuitaristAlthough the various avenues to enter the music industry today make it easier to do so, it is also true that a career in the business can be much shorter than was the case when people had to do it the hard way. Yes, it might be easier to become known, but how will you endure?

How many of today’s artists do you honestly believe will have the longevity of a David Bowie or an Elton John?

If you’re an ambitious musician looking to boost your profile in the industry and set yourself up for a successful, long career, professional advice can go a long way. Where can you find it?

Social Media Interaction

While you might not want to simply log onto social media and start approaching successful artists with questions, you should keep an eye out for when they do online Q&A sessions, as many people will probably ask the sort of questions that you want to.

Sometimes, advice might be something simple, such as to keep practicing, never stop believing in yourself, and upload your music to YouTube and other sites. On other occasions you might receive some specific advice about a technique, or realize you’ve been doing something counterproductive to your hopes without realizing it.

Music tutors are a great source of information, and much of the time they will also be session musicians or otherwise play in a live band themselves.

Their knowledge will often go far beyond simply how to play an instrument, and they might be able to get you where you want to be. If you’re a musician looking to develop your skill set, then finding the best online guitar lessons, or those relevant to whatever instrument you play, can help. Sites such as Pro Music Tutor feature advice from world-famous musicians, and there’s probably no one better to ask for advice.

Find a Studio You Know Someone Uses

There are recording studios in towns and cities around the world. While hiring one of these might not always be particularly cheap, if you can find a studio that is used by a big artist, you’ll often find yourself with the opportunity to speak with someone and pick their brains about what you should be doing differently.

Many will even listen to you and help to develop your sound, but you shouldn’t take that for granted when you start seeking studio space.

Unearthing Music Advice

As well as pursuing these avenues, you should continue doing what you already do; practice regularly, expand your horizons, and try to secure gigs, even small ones, at whatever venues you possibly can.

Ball Media Productions

December 8, 2007 by Chris

This is a company that is owned and run by an old guitarist buddy that I use to play with way back in the day. His name is John Ball and what a success story his is.

John and I always played together but not in the same band. We hung around the same circle of friends and musicians and to make a long story short, we had different playing styles that never really over lapped. He gravitated to the harder speed metal sort of arrangements while I was under a more Progressive Rock, Jazz and to a lesser extent Pop genre.

My sister and John were closer in age and they both were in the same grade at St. John’s College. Boy did both of them get themselves into a little bit of trouble as kids during those years! Then again, I was no angel either.

His company is called Ball Media Productions and he had his humble beginnings in our home town of Brantford, Ontario. He at first started his empire with a recording studio in the basement of a well known Brantford music studio called Music and Sound. Over the years he has branched of into different area’s as he sees fit.

Now his company has a jaw dropping amount of specialized services that can now compete with the big guys!

Ball Media includes Printing/Bindery, Packaging, Branding/Indentity, CD / DVD Replication, Graphic Design and Web/Multimedia plus video area’s of expertise. Take a look for yourself and if you do need his services for anything no matter how small, just tell him “Stickman” sent you!

I wish him well with all of his company’s future endeavors but I know that he doesn’t need it!

Keep on Jammin’ Johnnie!

G-Force Media Productions

October 25, 2006 by Chris

As you may or may not know but I am a 40 yr old guitar player living in Toronto Canada, who is continually upgrading my genre of music and sometimes wanting to record or just screw around in a recording studio. I, as well as every guitar player/musician on the planet, know how pricey it can be to just walk into a recording studio (not to mention the mixing time, which can add up to a great down payment for a house in Toronto) makes you feel like your a 3rd rate citizen.

But this place is run by a dear friends of mine. They are younger then I am but have quite the unbridled enthusiasm of seasoned professionals anywhere in the business. THESE GUYS HAVE THEIR CHOPS ON THEIR BOARD DOWN RIGHT!!!!!!

RICHARDO JONES, the true driving force behind this venture, has worked with me at a local hospital for 5 years. He is quite the accomplished keyboard player, greater in years then he looks. I’ve been in G-Force studio many times before, even helping out fixing up their new unique Shang-gra-la like recording location when they first got the keys for the joint. It’s also very difficult not to get along with this guy, really!

It’s a professional but very relaxing studio, this is the kind of place that any man would give his left nut to have in his basement.
They even have a beer dispensing machine in it, which is reasonably priced I might add!

The sound that he can pull out of his board is UNREAL! The equipment is old school looking, but the software and the versatility he has with it (most importantly), is TOP SHELF!!!

They also do video shooting editing and pic’s as well, done by a fine young man named Sye, for New York City. I’ve been fortunate to have known this guy, as well as Steve, for the same amount of time as Rick. This is VERY interesting as well, trust me. When you go down just to see what they have, ask them to show you some things they’ve done in the past, it’s a scream!

If your like me, or you just want to have had a experience just like, then JUST GET OFF YOUR ASS AND CALL THEM! Their NOT SALESMEN!!!! They love their craft and you’ll find that abundantly clear when you meet them, no more no less, that’s it.

Check them out at G-Force Media Productions.
