The Fountain

I’m back from Vegas!

Most of the photos I (or my husband who stole my camera) took in Vegas are of the fellow bloggers that we got together with. Since I don’t normally post photos of people on this site I’m not sure they’re all that appropriate. I do have some cool shots though so if you’re interested in seeing them please let me know.

The photos that aren’t of people were mostly taken at night and as a result aren’t as bright and clear as I’d like.

This photo is of a beautiful fountain outside the Venetian Hotel on the Strip in Vegas. It was just a gorgeous fountain.

City Afire

This is another photo of the sun setting on Toronto over Lake Ontario.

This photo was taken in late August while on a dinner boat on Lake Ontario.

Simply gorgeous.

Bee Balm seed head

Bee Balm is lovely in the garden and it attracts butterflies and I believe Hummingbirds. Unfortunately every good flowering plant eventually dies down in my Zone 5b Toronto garden.

This is the seed head of the perennial Bee Balm. The plant renews itself each year, but it’s seed head helps ensure that the plant is reseeded and new plants grow around the older plants each year creating an ever growing clump that must occasionally be divided or made smaller so as not to crowd out surrounding plants.

Is it Four o’ Clock?

This flower is best know by it’s common name of “Four o’ Clocks”, but it also goes by the names of Marvel of Peru, and it’s Latin name of Mirabilis jalapa.

As it’s common name implies this flower begins to bloom in the late afternoon around 4 pm. Mine have never opened that early though. Mine tend to open somewhere between 6 pm and 8 pm on long summer days.

I’ve found that the white four o’ clocks produce the strongest scent so I tend to only have white four o’ clocks in my garden. The scent is a strong jasmine and since the flowers tend to bloom all night long the garden is scented with their lovely jasmine scent at night.

This is an annual flower that produces large round hard black seeds from September until it stops blooming. I simply save the seeds in a cool dry place in the winter and plant them directly in the garden in late spring or early summer in order to produce new plants each year.
