A pretty, late Spring and Early summer, flowering plant that grows in my garden. Astilbe is a green leafy plant most of the year, but it blooms once each year for about a month and these are the flowers that are produced on long stalks that grow out from the clump of green leaves.

Bee Balm seed head
Bee Balm is lovely in the garden and it attracts butterflies and I believe Hummingbirds. Unfortunately every good flowering plant eventually dies down in my Zone 5b Toronto garden.
This is the seed head of the perennial Bee Balm. The plant renews itself each year, but it’s seed head helps ensure that the plant is reseeded and new plants grow around the older plants each year creating an ever growing clump that must occasionally be divided or made smaller so as not to crowd out surrounding plants.
