Snow, ice and leaves

Frost, ice and snow cover the last of the rose leaves.

This is a photo that I took in my garden near the beginning of January after we’d had a huge snow storm. I went outside in the morning and everything was so beautiful … you know that silence that falls after a snow storm. The dense snow seems to muffle sound leaving a profound silence all around. This is especially strange when you are in the heart of a huge city!

Mugo Pine branch dusted with snow

This is a snow covered Mugo Pine branch. I took this photo on the same day that I took the previous photo that I posted – right after a big snow storm here in Toronto. All of the trees were dusted with snow and it was beautiful.

I know those of you that don’t experience winter sometimes feel lucky when we complain about how cold it gets here, but snow can be a wonderful thing. Even my puppy thinks it’s fantastic!

Snow covered

In early January we had a big snow storm and this is what my Toronto neighborhood looked like for a while! Everything was dusted with snow.

The snow didn’t last long though. The weather warmed up and everything melted. It was darn right spring like in the middle of January … until last week when we were plunged into a deep freeze again. A deep freeze without any snow at all.

It’s been snowing again today so perhaps we’ll have a little snow cover for a few days until it melts away again.

Gathering pollen

A happy bumble bee gathering pollen from a Malva Sylvestra flower.

In the fall the bumble bees were happily enjoying all of my flowers that were still in bloom, gathering the last of the pollen for the year. It’s amazing how many bumble bees a small garden can fill up with on a nice autumn day. I’m glad bumble bees are calm and don’t mind being photographed.
