Glories of the snow just beginning to bloom

I took this photo about a month ago and these lovely Chionodoxa are long gone now … but I was happy to see them as they began to emerge. I love how they can poke through dead leaves and other debris no matter how heavy and still end up blooming. I’ve even seen these flowers first leaf spikes and other spring flowering plants first growth poking up through ice or still frozen ground. Amazing.

Closing in on Chionodoxa blooms

Glories of the Snow or Chionodoxa … a real close up of these lovely delicate blue flowers.

I love nothing more than seeing the first flowers of Spring after our long cold winters here in Toronto. Crocuses are usually the first to come up in late March, but these Glories of the snow are often the next flowers to grace my garden beds. I only wish that they bloomed in the fall too … that would be nice.

Amid the leaves

I love how these pale pink Glories of the snow seem to be peeking out from between the leaves. usually these flowers stand high above the leaves, but I think mine were suffering from a lack of water when I photographed them and they were nestled among the leaves giving them a little more of a wild flower kind of look.

Glories of the Snow

Why these lovely flowers are called “Glories of the Snow” (Chionodoxa) I don’t know. Mine never come up while there’s still snow on the ground. Nope … they tend to come up somewhere between the beginning of April and the end of the April depending how warm a spring we’re having.

This year they came up in early April and due to a mostly dry month I believe they’re already starting to die down a bit. We did have some rain yesterday (wind storm prior to it was like a mini-tornado!) and we’re expecting more today, so maybe the lovely little flowers will last for a while longer.

In this photo I love how the green plant leaves are swirling around the flowers. I took this photo from a different angle than I normally do when I photograph these short stemmed flowers.  I also like how the bent over tulip bud adds a punch of color to the background.
