Glories of the Snow

Why these lovely flowers are called “Glories of the Snow” (Chionodoxa) I don’t know. Mine never come up while there’s still snow on the ground. Nope … they tend to come up somewhere between the beginning of April and the end of the April depending how warm a spring we’re having.

This year they came up in early April and due to a mostly dry month I believe they’re already starting to die down a bit. We did have some rain yesterday (wind storm prior to it was like a mini-tornado!) and we’re expecting more today, so maybe the lovely little flowers will last for a while longer.

In this photo I love how the green plant leaves are swirling around the flowers. I took this photo from a different angle than I normally do when I photograph these short stemmed flowers.  I also like how the bent over tulip bud adds a punch of color to the background.

Hellebore – the Christmas Rose

It’s said that Hellebores bloom in the snow, often around Christmas time – but mine don’t! Mine bloom near the end of March or early April. They are not blooming yet, but their leaves are greening up so I expect to see lovely flowers like the one above (photo take a few years ago in my yard) very soon.

The Hellebore is such a lovely flower, it’s a shame that the flowers droop down. To take pictures of them I have to prop the flower head up on a leaf or gently hold it’s stem with my hand while trying to keep my hand or fingers out of the picture. I guess they make more work for me when I’m trying to photograph them, but it’s worth it.

Red Sumac

Sumac leaves turn red in Autumn and they develop fruit or seedpods that look like the one above. I think they’re kind of pretty. Especially when there is a large group of Sumac with their red leaves and fruit seedpods on display.

Fall Colors

Earlier this month my husband and I took our dog for a hike in a local park here in Toronto. There are wooded trails, clear open fields and of course the obligatory pond or two. All of the kinds of things that a dog or nature lover would enjoy!

The trees here in Toronto took their time changing color this year. When I took this photo the tree’s had just begun to change – and remember it was already November. Most years the trees leaves Change color halfway through or near the end of October.

Lovely either way, I love fall colors.
