The Sunflower – a true flower of summer

Whenever I see a sunflower I always think of the hot, humid, hazy days of summer. These flowers just mean summer to me. Perhaps it’s because Sunflowers are one of the first flowers I can remember liking as a child. In fact I do believe that sunflowers were one of the first flowers I ever planted too!

I can remember a hot late May or early June day up at the cottage. As my parents worked on their garden a family friend and I planted sunflower seeds. I was perhaps 7 years old at the time. Later in the year someone took a picture of me standing by the 10 or 11 foot tall row of sunflowers. It’s quite funny because I was only about four feet tall at the time and they just towered over me. Their stalks were so think that I probably could have climbed up one of the sunflowers.

Were sunflowers one of your favorite flowers as a child?

I took this photo when the sun was directly behind the sunflower. I like how bright sunlight makes the edges of the petals seems translucent.

Doesn’t nature create beautiful patterns?

This flower is known as Scabiosa or more commonly a Pincushion flower.

I thought mine had died out, but to my surprise several of these lovely flowers started coming up in my front flower bed this year. The petal pattern is lovely when viewed from above isn’t it?

Peony – what kind of name is that for a lovely flower

This beautiful peony is called Karl Rosenfield. Normally this peony is quite a deep red, but as the bloom ages it takes on a deep rose hue and the petals spread out and open the flower up.

It’s quite lovely and it’s quite large! This peony is approximately five to six inches in diameter. Now imagine a clump of them with 30 to 50 blooms! Spectacular!

Happy Canada Day!

A tulip with fringed petals

This is a hybrid tulip called Texas Flame. It’s also a fringed tulip – not the fringes on each petal? It’s quite lovely even when partially closed as in this photo. When the flower opens you can see an array of yellows, orange and red colors on the inner petals.

It’s just lovely.
