My new SONY HDR-SR5 Video Camera

July 3, 2007 by Chris

So we finally got ourselves a more then capable HD Video camera. Our SONY HDR-SR5 was bought this past Sunday. I have been going over the manual for some time now and I must admit it seems easy enough to use but to get the desired effect maybe another story.

hdr-sr5.jpg My first video attempt was just random shots here and there around the house. I also had the opportunity to video some fireworks down at our local park. It was Canada Day on Sunday so perfect timing! The focus was so fluid and the simple effects were just plain simple to execute! The touch screen was very user friendly not to mention very cool as well! It is set up in such a simple format that even my parents, I think, could figure it out. Sorry mom & dad!

hdrsr5.jpg

The HDR-SR5 has a CD for running the camera for idiots and another for the recording software as well as an in dept PDF manual that is very straight forward.

If you are looking for a HD Video camera I think you should check this one out! The only problem that I have with this so far is that we need a S-Video cable to plug it into our SAMSUNG HDTV. Otherwise full steam ahead.

Today I will install the software in my laptop and try out a few of the basic functions. I hope the software allows me to import the audio from an POD to the final video. If I am having problems the old boys at G-Force Media Productions in Toronto, can certainly help me out!

So wish me luck! Finally after all the hype about my starting to set up lessons on line it really will be coming soon to you my good readership!!!

Keep on Jammin’

I just got back from seeing Zai (pronounced Zi) and he instructed me to get ADOBE PREMIER PRO CS3. He is the head of Video Production at G-Force Media Productions. BTW, they just changed the name of their company to Home Grown Media. I told him what I was using it for and he said this IS WHAT I WANT.

It has this Slow Motion effect that neat. I guess it is good for looking at your golf swing if your into that. It that looks like fun but it is something that I was not looking for.

I will probably write more about it as I go.

    I am jealous.

I wish you luck with the video guitar lessons thing. Put some thought into a catch phrase and then say it every episode.

And maybe end off with “Long may your big jib draw”…it’s catchy and I think it is public domain at this point as well.

I wish to buy this camera after having heard so many good comments about it. I however discovered one particular comment in Amazon.com from a user who says you can hear “popping sound” from the hard disk when you do the recording. He mentioned that you should take a shot of at least 20 seconds and when playback you can hear that sound. He says he detected this after a few recording and managed to traced it to the hard disk. This was further confirmed by 2 other users. Have you encountered this problem so far? I am on the verge of getting this Camera and hope you can give me this feedback. Thanks

Foo, i just bought this camera today. and got on here to read some reviews (did that backwards I guess) and yes, i did read the ‘popping’ sound review. I didn’t notice it when I was testing it, but then I set it in my kitchen, alone, without touching it, and yes, you can hear a popping sound. I don’t know why no one else has said a word about this. I bought it to film weddings, and I’m not sure if I will keep it or not. But if i take it back to best buy, I will have to pay a 15% restocking fee, which ends up being like 150 bucks. Please, more people comment on this sound and if there is a way to get around it!!!

Foo, that’s very interesting! I haven’t noticed this at all when I have been recording. I will try this right soon and I’ll get back too you on it!

    Keep on Jammin’

I have recently bought this camera and its great. Previously I had a canon XM1 (the small semi pro cam), actually I still have it and its still okay but nothing compared to the quality of these HD cameras.

The new cameras are just getting better and better!

I was going to opt for the dvd driven sony cam but thought about the costs of the media and though a few more bucks spent on a HD version is much better.

presumably you’ll be using that camcorder to capture yourself belting out some riffs for us. i look forward to seeing the quality of the video, and your playing 🙂 – Stephen
