Hugh Dillon the musician

October 14, 2009 by Chris

As someone who loves the show Flashpoint and even Durham County, to a lesser degree, my favorite character in both is Hugh Dillon. He has that raw feel that he brings to us every episode which makes you want more. He is also one of those types of guys that we all knew of when we were in high school. Most critics feel that his musical past has help him develop into the actor that he is today.

He grew up in Kingston Ontario and had a classmate named Gord Downie from the band Tragically Hip. At the age of 17 they both had been bitten by the rock and roll bug. I recall in some article somewhere that he talked about a night when he and Gord were at this local Kingston watering hole called the Prince George. In the men’s bathroom they came across this 70 something blues musician smoking pot from a weird corn cob pipe. This made him think about his musical future.

Later on he was the lead singer in the popular band called The Headstones which started in 1987. It was definitely not one of those wedding type of bands. They were loud, obnoxious and were not that accommodating to their fellow members in the industry that they loved.

They first started playing at a place called Blue Moon Saloon on Bloor St. West in Toronto. What a great place to see a band. My buddies the Big Kahuna had their first start there! Then The Headstones got their big break at Sneaky Dee’s right down the street at it’s original location. Over it lifespan the band enjoyed nationwide radio-play and had a Juno Award nomination. They finally broke up in 2003.

The most popular commercial song they covered was called Tweeter and the Monkey Man(1993), from The Traveling Wilburys (1988).

Later on in his life he would be battling a part of the music world’s dark under belly. The one that no one whats to be exposed to … heavy drug use! His addiction to cocaine, followed by heroin, introduced him to the rough and tough side of life. Fortunately for him he found the right path and came back to us in one piece! He says it took him running up against that stone wall and back again that led him and the character that he portrays on TV, with the essence of actor that he came to be.

Hugh Dillon’s newest band is called The Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir. It seems a lot tamer then his earlier ventures with his old bandmates but you can notice him maturing as a singer. I really like their tune called The Gods have spoken His new sound, dare I say, sounds safer? It’s amazing how things can become quite tame when a cop walks into the room!

Keep on Jammin’

AUX TV sounds good but what is it?

October 11, 2009 by Chris

A new music channel on Rogers cable in Ontario you say? Something that will just play music that is interesting and ground breaking? Sounds like Much Music ages ago … not exactly says Aux TV president Raja Khanna.

TORONTO — As of Thursday, Oct. 1 at 9 p.m. EST, the nation will once again have a “music” station when Aux TV launches via Rogers Cable channel 107.

Raja also said in another article that “We’re focusing on groundbreaking new music. If it’s great music, I don’t care who’s writing it. If the Jonas Brothers were writing groundbreaking new music, we would report on it.” Ok, fair enough.

They also claim to be playing about 60/40 Canadian-to-international programming and that would be nice because we seem to be producing so much music these days!

Aux TV’s platform, they claim, is around 70% unique and syndicated shows with approximately 30% videos in their overall scheme.

I checked out their website first and found some neat interviews. I then headed off to see them on Rogers Channel 107, and overall it seems ok but I’ll have to wait a while to view more of their programs when I can.

Has anyone else out there seen some of their programming?

Keep on Jammin’

The Hour on CBC TV

August 28, 2009 by Chris

The Hour is a Canadian TV talk show with host George Stroumboulopoulos. The Hour has had some fabulous guests in the past and I’m more then sure many more to come.

It’s one of those great Canadian shows that allows their guests to be perfectly relaxed to in a public forum. George provides us a candid glimpse into his guests personal and private lives. He it seems to make his new friends feel like they’re all just sitting around the kitchen table, having a coffee and shooting the breeze. in my eyes, George is one of Canada’s greatest interviewers today!

George was first brought to the public’s attention way back when he was a young video VJ from the old Much Music scene. This is a music station in Canada that shares a similar format to music channel MTV in the US.

The musician’s that have been on the show are perfectly suited to his hosting skill set.
Some of the more resent ones that I really liked was the Canadian singer called K-os. George invites him to just relax and chill on his show.

Some non musicians that have been on the show is impressive as well. Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter’s piece was very insightful and moving to my wife and I. You know I did not realize that bob Dylan’s song Hurricane was about this great man, huh!

Has anyone seen The Hour on CBC? If so, what do you think! should he continue in this format Or should he be back at Much Music?

George, Keep on Jammin’

Good Times are making me feel quite old!

August 13, 2009 by Chris

Chelloooooo, remember that greeting? It’s from kid DYNOMITE!!!!!!!!!! Ain’t we lucky we got/had ’em, GOOD TIMES!

The theme song is what made we write a post about it. My wife and I subscribe to this TV channel called Deja View and it’s just full of all our old time favorite TV shows! This is one of those songs that keep running through my mind when something I hear reminds me of it.I love this theme song so much that I sing it at work every once in a while.

While bringing patients from the recovery room back to where ever they are going, I hum a few songs here and there, and from time to time, I catch the patients jumping in with words of just humming along with me! It’s a hell of a lot of fun to do this and it really helps make the patients and their family/visitors relax and feel more at home.

This classic 70’s TV show was first aired in February 8, 1974 and ended on August 1, 1979 It taught us many life lessons and helped brake down some racial barriers that existed at the time.

The cast was Esther Rolle (Florida why did they name me Florida Evans, John Amos was James Evans, Ja’net DuBois played Willona Woods(that crazy neighbour), Jimmie Walker was the unforgettable James “J.J.” Evans, Jr., Bern Nadette Stanis was Thelma and Ralph Carter as Michael.

Trivia about the show.

  • This spinoff of the TV series, Maude, centered on the Evans family. In Maude Esther Rolle had portrayed Florida Evans, the black housekeeper, but in Good Times Florida and her family were struggling to survive in a South Side ghetto in Chicago.
    • Michael doesn’t have a room. He sleeps on the couch in the living room with J.J.
    • Posters that appear in Thelma’s Room: 2 of Sly Stone, 1 of Carlos Santana
    • In a rare moment for the early episodes of the series, Thelma actually stands up for J.J. and even says how much she misses him after he leaves. I didn’t see that one coming, did you?
    • Willona states her ex-husband is named Alvin. In the fourth season he is named Ray. I did not know that!

I have so many favorite episodes that it’s just ridiculous! Which ones do you remember the most or had a lasting memory to you?

Temporary lay offs. Good Times. Easy credit rip offs. Good Times. Scratchin’ and surviving. Good Times. Hangin in a chow line. Good Times. Ain’t we lucky we got ’em. Good Times.

    Keep on Jammin’

Spinal Tap on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart

    July 29, 2009 by Chris

My ever so vigilant wife found out that the Mock Rock gods Spinal Tap were going to perform 2 songs on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

She PVR’d it, or TIVO’d for my US readers, for me and as usual, they were right out of this world!

The 2 songs they did was from their latest album titled Back from the Dead!

The first one was called Funky Sex Farm (3 of 4). It is an ultra modern day funk sound that is riveting from start to finish! Who says old men can’t ROCK!

spinaltap David St. Hubbins, who is played by actor Michael McKean, is fabulous in this performance. The solo that he did was really sweet! Playing a lead while singing takes some practice and talent. He certainly has both down pat! He also has a Jeff Beck sound to his playing throughout the whole song, NICE! “Fathering your live stock” was the funniest line in the song!

Nigel Tufnel‘s, who is played by actor Christopher Guest, guitar style in this one was simple and to the point. When the band was being interviewed in the beginning of the second song, Nigle was so funny. I just about fell off the couch!

Next, is the bass player with the Lemmy mustache from Motorhead. Derek Smalls had a nice groove going on in this one. I was very impressed with his performance. He, like Nigel in the early years of Spinal Tap, was a simple, no nonsense kinda of player. I think some bass slapping would be perfect here.

At the end of this one, they ventured into a genre that I never thought spinal Tap would ever enter into … they rapped. G.D. that was hilarious! The song overall fit into their wheel house and most of all it was very tight.

The second tune(4 of 4)was a more bluesy type song called Give me some Money. They seemed to pull this one off perfectly. It’s got that Texas Rock feel to it with a 60’s keyboard oriented band sounds to it. straight forward R & R, too bad they they didn’t get all of it on the video.

So God bless and long live the boys in Spinal Tap and hopefully many more years of mock rocking to come!

The Cole Porter Movie called De-Lovely

    June 10, 2009 by Chris

Cole Porter was a genius composer. I’ve played some of his tunes as a kid and as I have grown as a musician, I now have a better feel for how great this man really was.

At work the other day, I got into a conversation with a patient. We were talking about different styles of playing guitar and it gravitated to Cole Porter. He brought up this movie called De-Lovely and said that it was a must to see.

Since then I’ve been searching our TV for it to no avail. I’ve also tried calling up some video stores to see if they have it in their collection, no luck there either.

My question to all of you out there is, has anyone seen it? Is it really worth buying it?

    China Girl from Anna Ternheim

    May 23, 2009 by Chris

I was watching Without a Trace the other night with my wife and during the show a great version of China Girl from David Bowie came on.

It was a interpretation that we both had never heard of before. Wanting to now more about this adaptation of the original song, my wife found out that it was perfectly executed by a Swedish singer named Anna Ternheim.

It was of an unplugged nature. The song was soft, slow and very dream like. Anna Ternheim used only this haunting bass, beat box in the backdrop of her rendition of this great work. Her voice is very airy and to some her voice comes across as sounding like either Alanis Morissette. We both came to this conclusion, a couple of seconds into the piece.

I know nothing of this artist except for a insightful interview into who and what she is all about musically. Her band’s site and Myspace account does not dive to much into what makes her tick but, I’m sure I’ll find out more about her in the future.

Has anyone else out there heard of this women before? What is your take on her exclusive style of performing?

Checking out concerts live in your living room

    May 9, 2009 by Chris

Imagine checking out a fabulous concert of your favorite act! The vibe during the show is just infectious. Just lining up at the gate to get in can get your heart a pumping! Finally after getting in, your bumping into people racing to grab a light refreshing liquid beverage(or in my case many!), listening to other music lovers talking about previous shows or the band in general.

That’s what I love about the concert experience! Now imagine being at a great gig, only that it’s at home and on your TV/computer screen?!

Well that’s what this classical company is introducing to us. I’m not sure, but I’d give it a go, just for the hell of it.

The company, called Berliner Philharmoniker, is providing LIVE CONCERTS, via live audio-video streams through the internet. Mind you, they also provide the avid classical lover past shows as well.

Would you subscribe to something like this? I’d love to find out what you all think about this new experience.

    The Shmenge Brothers

    April 19, 2009 by Chris

The Schmenge Brothers, like many of the Canadians of the day, were a happy bunch that didn’t mind making fun of themselves in front of the world. We could all relate to these overly happy go lucky guys. When ever watching these guys on SCTV, they made me feel like I was in the show because the circle of friends I had back then, acted like them from time to time.

While growing up in Brantford, I had tons of Polish friends that I went to school with.

These guys and girls were really the salt of the earth bunch. Like all good R.C.-ers, X-mas was a big part of our lives and the Schmenge brothers just loved to celebrate and share their Lutonian Christmas traditions with others.

The traditional polish, polka band stereo type was always a silly topic that we constantly brought up in conversation.

This was because everyone, at least that I knew, back then had someone who was in one of these types of bands. When you got to know the band members and see them live, most of them had those similar on stage persona’s, just like that of the Schmenge Brothers characters!

So this post is dedicated to all my old happy wanderers polish buddies who had rock and roll polka bands in the past! Thanx for the memories guys.

    Heartbeats by Jose Gonzolez

    March 27, 2009 by Chris

While my wife and I were watching the TV series Bones on our PVR the other night, I picked up on this tune that really stuck in my mind. The guitarist name is Jose Gonzolez and his breathtaking song called Heartbeats, is a thing of wonder.

It is one of those songs they play during a show that is playing in the background, at a low volume. Most people don’t give it a second thought but, it lingers in ones mind long after the show is over. After the show ended my wife found it, the women is a god on finding anything on the web, and sent me a Youtube link to it!

Most of you may recognize this fabulous piece of music from the Sony Bravia (bouncy balls) TV commercial. The song itself is just so graceful and pure to my mind and ears.

This guitar picking technique is my favorite style, Drone Picking! It’s very fluid approach to playing. You can implement this mode of performing to just about any song! It can make a listener hypnotized at the drop of a hat. The art Drone will also highlight your guitar playing versatility.

Heart Beats is very simple but, yet it contains layers of complexity that just allows the listener to float away quite easily. It is a song that when I close my eyes, grants me ability to see the song in colour. This is a phrase that I picked up from my God son.

He is completely blind in one eye and is 80% in the other. One day at my parents home in Brantford, he was there so I brought him into the piano room and played some songs and progressions on it for him to listen to. After playing a certain phrasing, I asked him what he saw in his mind and he said he saw particular colours! Wow, that made me think about music in a completely different train of thought from that moment onwards.

This song really does it for me and I hope you get the same effect from it as I did. Just listen to this video and close your eyes … does this song give you the same sensation as it does for me?
