Technorati has a new look

by Tricia

Have you been to Technorati lately? It seems that they’ve totally changed their look in the last day or two. I went there to check on how my various sites were ranking, and here’s a look at what the page for my main site Tricia’s Musings at feverishthoughts.com looks like when you look up the domain in the directory:

I like the new look, but it seems like they cut out some of the info that was previously available, while trying to consolidate the majority of information about a site onto one page.

When I clicked on my user name – dragonden – I was taken to a page that looked similar to the one above, except all my blogs were listed in the right hand column, and each blog now has a bubble beside it that shows how many people have marked each of my sites as a favorite.

Speaking of favoriting sites. I sure would love it a few more people would favorite this site … but I’d love it even more if you’d mark Tricia’s Musings down as a favorite. I’d love to get that site into the top 100 technorati favs list but I need several more favs to get there.

Blogarama

by Tricia

As I’ve said before one good way to promote your site is to get it listed in a number of directories. If you have a niche website or blog it’s also a good idea to try to find specialty directories that list a number of sites similar to your own in topic or genre as well.

One general directory that you should list your blog is Blogarama. Just sign up for an account and you can list your site there free of charge. For the nominal fee of $10 you can change your free account to a premier account and receive better listings for your sites and a public profile for your account.

Sites are reviewed and approved by editors and it can take 1 to 10 days to have your site approved. You’ll receive an email once your site has been reviewed telling you if your site has been approved or rejected.

Once your site is listed in the directory it can be rated by other Blogarama visitors or members. Your site will be given a score that will be made up of user ratings, incoming and outgoing traffic. Placing a link to Blogarama on your site will allow Blogarama to track how many new visitors you send to their site – the more visitors you send the better your site rating will be in the directory.

In other words, if you send them visitors they’ll try to help you by rating your site higher and sending you visitors too since higher rated sites are listed near the top of each blog directory section.

Blog Flux

by Tricia

If you write a blog or any kind of website for that matter, I can’t stress how important it is to not only create good content for your site, but to promote your site by listing it in as many search engine listings, and directories as you can. The more listings you have the more visitors you’ll eventually get. This of course is of particular importance if you are trying to monetize your site. Visitors mean money – eventually.

One of the sites that I would recommend that you list your sites on is Blogflux. This site isn’t only a directory in which you should list your blog, it has a number of other features that you can put to good use on your site as well.

On the Blogflux site you’ll find:

  • A Button Maker – makes 80×15 or 88×13 buttons with a few clicks.
  • LinkLog – Track what links are being clicked on by your users, how often they are clicked, and what pages they are clicked from.
  • MapStats – The best way to keep track of your visitors. Not only does it provide the normal statistics found with other stat counter sites, it meshes up with Google Maps to show where your visitors are coming from.
  • PageRank Checker – Google’s PageRank is a way of ranking how important a site is. Check and show off your PR to your site’s visitors.
  • Pinger – Pinging other sites one by one can be a chore. Just enter two fields and hit submit to automatically ping a dozen sites.
  • Polls – Instantly create AJAX-driven polls that also let you map vote results to Google Maps.
  • Quick RSS Links – Reduce the clutter on your blog. Use blogflux’ link to provide users with quick links to various feed subscribers or email subscription option.
  • Scramble – Protect your email from spamming spiders. Javascript protection to foil them all.
  • Subscription Service – Keeping track of all your favorite blogs can be a hassle and time consuming. Get a daily email that lets you know which of your subscribed blogs have updated posts.
  • Suggest – Finding blogs that you want to read is not easy – too much noise out there! Blog Flux Suggest makes finding interesting blogs an easy and quick experience. Best of all – no spam
  • Themes – Find and download themes for all of the popular blog software packages.
