Are you part of the I Follow Movement?

by Tricia

A few days ago I wrote a post on one of my other sites about the I Follow movement and how many bloggers have decided to remove the rel no follow tags from the comment sections of their blogs so that they could give their visitors that took the time to stop and leave a comment a real link.

Now, I’ve had a plugin on my sites called Comment Plugger for the better part of the last year and this plugin gave my site visitors a real link directly under the post whenever they left a comment. Now I’ve also added the Do Follow Plugin to all of our sites to ensure that all comments left anywhere on our sites provide real links that will be picked up by the search engines for our site visitors.

If you’d like to become part of the I Follow movement, either go into your sites template and change the no follow tags to follow tags in your comment section, or if you are a wordpress user download the No Follow plugin and simply activate it in order to provide links that search engines can follow when your visitors leave a comment.

If you’ve already removed the No Follow tags I’d also like to invite you to join the Do Follow blogroll that I created this past Sunday. The list is growing daily and already has at least 50 blogs listed on it. I’d love to add your site too! Visit my Do Follow bloggers page to learn what you need to do to qualify for the list, then send me a message and I’ll email the blogroll code to you so that you can add it to your site. Simple as that – soon you too can be a Do Follow Blogger.

If you’d like to get on the D-List and pass it on to others, along with the benefit of spreading the links of sites that are part of the I follow movement please read my post “Have you been following the I follow movement” over on Tricia’s Musings. Copy the current list and add some Do follow sites to the list and post your own altered version of the list on your site. Spread the word.

New Plugins

by Tricia

Last week I spent a lot of time writing a number of Tech related posts on my main blog Tricia’s Musings. Why I’m not writing about these things here I’m not sure.

Anyway, I’ve slowly been installing a number of new plugins on my husband and I’s blogs. One of the plugins that I’ve recently started using on Tricia’s Musings in the Top Commentator plugin. I will discuss this plugin further on this site, but if you’d like to read what I wrote on Tricia’s Musings and see the plugin in action in the right sidebar go have a peek.

I’ve set up the top commentator plug in to list the top ten people who comment on my site each month in the right sidebar. So far my visitors are loving the plugin. Well the ones who are making it into the top ten are anyway.

I think I’ll do a whole series on the various plugins that I use on our blogs. If you are interested in learning more about wordpress plugins, especially the ones that I’m using on this site and others, please come back and visit in a few days.

Easy way to create WordPress Blog

by Tricia

There are several ways to install a new blogging platform onto your web hosts server. Today I’d like to tell you the easiest way to install WordPress onto your hosting server. Similar techniques can be used for other blogging platforms and or other programs that are available through your hosts Fantastico feature.

If your web hosting account is set up with C-Panel you’re in luck. You should be able to reach your C-Panel area directly simply by placing/cpanel at the end of your domain url. For example http://yourdomain.com/cpanel. Once you connect with C-Panel you’ll have to sign in with your hosting account user name and password.

Once you have signed into the C-panel area you’ll see a number of icons. Each icon will lead you to useful features that you can use to maintain your websites, webmail, MySQL databases and many other features.

One of the icons will be called Fantastico. Click on the Fantastico icon and you’ll be taken to a page that lists all of the different software applications that Fantastico can automatically install to your directories.

If you want to install a new WordPress blog simply look for the section that says Blogs. You’ll see WordPress listed there as well as perhaps a few other blogging platforms. Click on WordPress and go through the install procedure.

You’ll be asked which directory you’d like to host your new blog on. If you only have one domain hosted with your webhost the choice will be easy. Select your domain in the first section. Then, if you want the blog to be the main feature of your domain select leave the “install in Directory” section blank. If you’d like your blog to be reachable by an url such as http://yourdomain.com/blog then place a name for the new directory in this section.

Note, if you’d like to create a blog in a sub-domain you must use the sub-domain feature in C-Panel to create a sub-domain first, once you’ve done that you’ll see the sub-domain listed in your domain choices when you attempt to install WordPress. You’d select your new sub-domain and leave the “Install directory” section blank if you want your blog to be in a domain that looks like http://blog.mydomain.com.

The rest is pretty simple. Fill in the rest of the information such as your log in user name and password. This can be, and usually is different than the log in that you use for your webhost. It could be as simple as username admin and a unique password.

Continue to follow the directions and in minutes you’ll have a new blog to begin setting up. I’ll talk about setting up a new blog in a future post.
