How To Set Up Your WordPress Blog

by Tricia

Blogs are one of the quickest and easiest ways to set up your website.

Most hosting companies give you the option of a “one click” installation of WordPress and if you have this available, it’s worth using as it will take care of setting up the database that WordPress will use.

The only downside to using this method is that WordPress regularly introduces updates, which means you may have a version that isn’t quite the latest one. It’s up to you whether you’re worried about this, although I would advise that you do keep your version of WordPress as up to date as possible as the updates often cover security bugs.

The next thing to do once you’ve got the newest version of WordPress installed on your website is to make some small changes that will have a big influence on making it as attractive as possible to the search engines.

This involves modifying some of the default WordPress settings and also uploading what are known as “plugins” to improve the functionality of WordPress.

I recommend that you install the following plugins:

  • Akismet, a useful plugin that helps cut down comment spam on your blog
  • All in one SEO pack, which does exactly what it promises and helps you optimize your blog so that the search engines will love it
  • Sociable, so that your blog readers can easily add your blog to a selection of social bookmarking sites
  • WordPress stats, which offer a quick overview of your most popular pages and the links your readers have clicked on, all easily accessible from your main WordPress dashboard

The other thing to change is the “permalink” structure. You can select this from the Settings menu in WordPress. Once you’ve chosen Permalinks, go down to the box called custom structure and type in:

/%postname%/

then save your changes.

This will change the way your blog posts are stored and will make them friendlier for the search engines to index.

Basics of Blogging

by Tricia

Do you have lots of ideas that you would like to share to other people? Do you have comments about certain issues that you want to share to others? Do you have new information that you want others to learn? Do you love to write articles that you want many people to read? If your answer to one or all of these is yes then blogging is for you.

What is blogging?

Generally, blogging is described as a way of writing about something that you want other people to read over the internet. It’s one way of expressing your thoughts and feelings for other people to know.

But blogging can take on a lot of meaning depending on who is doing it.

What is blogging for many young people?

For most teenagers and the young, it is one way to socialize in the net. It is their venue to connect with the people their age, with the people who share the same interests. One example is that there are social networking sites that allow their members to write bogs. To keep your friends on coming back, just keep writing interesting blogs that will catch their attention.

What is blogging for people interested in academics and studying?

For professors, scholars and students, it is a way for them to share and brainstorm new ideas about topics like the newest development in the search for the cure for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or for the latest techniques in in the field of mechanical science or robotics. By writing blogs, they can present their researches for possible comments and suggestions. They can also reach people who are otherwise uninterested in academic stuff and would rather surf the internet than read theses and dissertations.

What is blogging for entrepreneurs?

Blogging is a way for them to get more web traffic and advertise their products. Some entrepreneurs create their own blogs where they can post promotional gimmicks, testimonials and reviews. Those into newbie marketing buy ad spaces in other blogs to reach possible customers. There are some who sp0nsor blogs for promotion.

There are others who consider blogging as their main source of income. These are the people whom entrepreneurs go to for promotion of their products if they cannot or do not want to create their own blogs. Businesses look for blogs with niche topics that are directly related or in some way associated with their products. It’s one rule of SEO For example, people selling cellular phones or computers look for blogs that talk about different gadgets. They get to be exposed to their target market.

Some bloggers write blogs to create niche blogs so they can attract advertisers. They can just simply write about a certain topic and offer ad spaces for products related to what they write. There are some who write something and then mention a product name which is linked to that product’s own website. They can also offer to write good reviews for certain products and get paid for doing it.

Check your intentions if you are planning to have your own blog. Ask yourself why you want to have a blog and then tailor fit your blog according to your intentions. You have the option of having several blogs to answer your different needs. There is no rule that says that you have to be confined in just one area only. There are a lot of possibilities that go along with blogging. You just have to explore blogging and benefit from it.

WP_Posts database crashed – HELP!

by Tricia

If you see this post a few times it’s because I really need help and I’m posting it on three of my blogs – sorry for the repeat, but if you can help, please do!

I need some help fixing my husbands blog – Guitar Licks. Today when he visited the site (while I was still sleeping) the blog had error messages stating that the WP_posts database had crashed.

When you visit his site it loads with the WP theme and sidebars, but there’s error messages at the top and a “post cannot be found” message where current posts should be listed on the index page.

Some of the errors state:

ALTER TABLE wp_posts ADD FULLTEXT `yarpp_title` ( `post_title`)

ALTER TABLE wp_posts ADD FULLTEXT `yarpp_content` ( `post_content`)

So I’m assuming this error has something to do with the Yet another related post plugin that I’m using on most of my blogs. This blog is using the plugin version 2.16 and is using WP 2.62.

In the Yet another related posts plugin admin area there was a message that said:

YARPP’s “consider titles” and “consider bodies” relatedness criteria require your wp_posts table to use the MyISAM storage engine, but the table seems to be using the engine. These two options have been disabled.
To restore these features, please update your wp_posts table by executing the following SQL directive: ALTER TABLE `wp_posts` ENGINE = MyISAM; . No data will be erased by altering the table’s engine, although there are performance implications.
If, despite this check, you are sure that wp_posts is using the MyISAM engine, press this magic button:

I clicked on the “magic button” as the plugin seems to be working just fine in all of my other blogs and I ended up with even more errors!

Help!

I’ve looked at the WP database for this blog and the WP_posts table says “in use” and I can’t browse it. I also can’t use the backup plugin in Guitar licks – it’s there and functioning but just hung when I tried to do a back up.

I’ve backed up the whole database using PHPmyAdmin so I have a copy in case something goes terribly wrong. Now I just need to know how to fix it.

Should I just place a check mark on WP_posts and then click the repair function at the bottom of the structure screen in PHPmyAdmin and see if that repairs the problem?

I’m nervous about attempting to fix this as I’ve never had to try to repair a database error before. Any help would be appreciated.
