Add a contact form to your site

by Tricia

Ever since I started my blogs I’ve been looking for a good WordPress plugin that would create a contact form. I tried one popular contactform plugin a while ago, but I could never get it to work on my blogs.

Now I’ve discovered Wp-ContactForm, and in combination with the Exec-PHP (note this isn’t the more commonly used PHP-exec plugin – this one works better, well for me anyway!) I now have contact forms on each of my blogs.

One of the features of this contactform plugin that I really like is the ability to create drop down lists within the contact form. There’s often more than one reason why someone might want to contact the author of a blog using a contact form. It might be to have a private conversation about a post or about exchanging links or perhaps to request advertising. You can see an example of this sites contact form by clicking on the word contact in the top nav bar.

You can add security questions of your choosing when you set up your contact form too. I’m using a simple math equation, but you could ask your visitor to answer a more complex question or repeat a code and you can request that the case of the letters be ignored or otherwise. Hopefully this helps prevent abuse by spam bots. I haven’t used the contactform plugin long enough to know how well this feature is working yet.

Try the plugin out if you want to give your site visitors another way to contact you other than via you comment section.

So how many of you got hit by Google?

by Tricia

The other day when I saw sites across the board having their page rank lowered by Google I started to not feel quite as bad about losing some of my page rank. Hey, after all, it seems just about everyone’s in the same boat!

There’s been a lot of speculation as to what caused Google to hit so many sites by lowering their page ranks. Everything from speculation as to whether it was caused by paid links or networking too many sites and so on.

I run one of the Do follow blogrolls. Well, I think the only do follow blogroll and I’ve had a few people decide to drop off the list as a result of the google hits. Personally I don’t think being do follow has anything to do with all of our PR loses. I mean, I’ve been a do follow blogger for almost two years and this is the first time I’ve ever taken a google hit!

Well, ok, the last update my html based website went from a PR5 to a PR4 but I believe that was mostly because I hadn’t updated the site with any new articles for a long while. Hey … it’s got about 1000 pages – how much more can I write about exotic pet keeping on the site anyway? Really!

But this time around? Every single site I own, even ones that I do not sell links of any kind on have been hit!

Oh well, like I said, it looks like we’re all in the same boat. It will be interesting to see what happens if Google ever gets around to doing a proper page rank update.

The trouble is, if they really are upset with those that sell links or who have committed some other kind of infraction against Google … well that’s just going to make people get better at hiding what they are doing. I can see people starting to use code or cipher to encrypt their links to mask what they are doing.

Don’t you see something like that happening too? I mean, no one’s just going to give in and stop making the money that they have been just because of Google are they?

by Tricia

On October 2nd Barracuda Networks announced that it had signed a license agreement with Open Invention Networks. Open Invention Networks (OIN) launched in 2005 as an intellectual property company that specializes in acquiring patents and ensuring their availability in order to further the Linux System.

Several companies have now become licensees of OIN in order to help ensure that Linux-Based and open source intellectual properties get the protection they deserve.

It’s important that developers of Linux-based programs and open source intellectual properties work in a legally protected environment and partnerships such as the one being created between Barracuda networks and Open Invention Networks will go a long way towards ensure that new Linux based software continues to be created and that businesses will continue to invest in Linux and Open Source.

Barracuda Networks has been an active member in the open source and free software communities.
