So how many of you got hit by Google?

by Tricia

The other day when I saw sites across the board having their page rank lowered by Google I started to not feel quite as bad about losing some of my page rank. Hey, after all, it seems just about everyone’s in the same boat!

There’s been a lot of speculation as to what caused Google to hit so many sites by lowering their page ranks. Everything from speculation as to whether it was caused by paid links or networking too many sites and so on.

I run one of the Do follow blogrolls. Well, I think the only do follow blogroll and I’ve had a few people decide to drop off the list as a result of the google hits. Personally I don’t think being do follow has anything to do with all of our PR loses. I mean, I’ve been a do follow blogger for almost two years and this is the first time I’ve ever taken a google hit!

Well, ok, the last update my html based website went from a PR5 to a PR4 but I believe that was mostly because I hadn’t updated the site with any new articles for a long while. Hey … it’s got about 1000 pages – how much more can I write about exotic pet keeping on the site anyway? Really!

But this time around? Every single site I own, even ones that I do not sell links of any kind on have been hit!

Oh well, like I said, it looks like we’re all in the same boat. It will be interesting to see what happens if Google ever gets around to doing a proper page rank update.

The trouble is, if they really are upset with those that sell links or who have committed some other kind of infraction against Google … well that’s just going to make people get better at hiding what they are doing. I can see people starting to use code or cipher to encrypt their links to mask what they are doing.

Don’t you see something like that happening too? I mean, no one’s just going to give in and stop making the money that they have been just because of Google are they?

Getting organized and cross promoting sites

by Tricia

I’m not being very wise lately.

I made a post on The Web Files early this morning about how I’ve been having trouble keeping up with all my blogs lately – partly because I have so many, and partly because I have so much work that I can do the prep work (writing draft articles for each site) that I used to do in the past.

One of the dumb things I’ve been doing is not always writing about tech stuff on my two tech related blogs. Duh.

I just wrote an article on my most general blog about using business cards to promote your website and or blog in social situations. Naturally that article would have been perfect for this site or the Web Files. Right?

If you’ve ever thought of making up business cards that have your website address on them go and read what I just posted on My World. You might get some ideas as to how to use the cards effectively.

At the very least, by writing an article on another site and telling you about it here I’ve just practiced another technique that anyone who has multiple websites should try.

I wouldn’t do this all the time, but if you’ve written an article on another one of your sites that readers from another site might want to read, by all means post about it. You’ll be linking to one of your articles and giving the originating site another link and with any luck you’ll send new visitors to the originating site as well.

This is a fairly basic cross promotion technique, but I don’t see it used all that often on many of the sites I visit regularly. Give it a try.

The importance of search engine optimization

by Tricia

I’m sure you hear the word SEO quite often as you surf the internet. Perhaps you already know that SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, but are you aware of how to optimize your site for search engines and what it really means?

You can optimize you site at any time for search engine ranks and marketing purposes but the best time to do it is of course when you create the site. Everything from the domain name you choose to the title of your sites, the title of your articles or blog posts all count towards optimizing your site for better standings on search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN and others.

Many people, and companies choose to turn to companies that offer seo services. Companies such as SubmitAWebsite.com, a search engine optimization company, offer services such as analyzing your site against your competitors, keyword analysis, keyword ranking reports, optimize the code and content of some of your sites pages for better search engine optimization, register your website with the top free web directories, offer link building consultation and services and much more.

If the purpose of your website is sales or service then it’s important for your sites keywords to come up high on the search engine pages. You want your site to consistently be on the first page when someone searches for one of the keywords that could bring them to your site. I mean, this is how you get traffic to your site and make sales right?

I think everyone who runs a website should know a little bit about SEO and work towards optimizing their sites for SEO, but if you own a business and you want to outrank the competition it might be wise to look into the search engine optimization services offered by a seo company such as SubmitAWebsite.com.
