You can have your own affordable online success

by Tricia

Many online business ideas require some level of financial investment to get them started. When you are short on cash you must do the legwork and the promotion for yourself – in the beginning anyway! At least you know it will be done right.

There are however several affordable online success methods and techniques that can be started on a shoe string budget. Imagine that you have a budget of $100 (£50) to start your first online business. How would you use your grand budget of $100?

I’ve been running my own websites since 1995 and blogs since 2006 and I’ve barely put any money into them other than the cost of domains and hosting.  You really don’t have to spend much money to have online success if you are willing to work hard at promoting your sites and networking with other bloggers/ site owners.

So how can you have online affordable success?

You first need to research a theme or niche that your website will focus on. You can use a number of tools online and many of them have free versions. Wordtracker is the best trial software to use to complete your keyword research. So do your research to find a niche that has people looking for answers. Try to find keywords for your niche (usually three word (long tail keywords) are best) that have less than 50,000 competing pages. You will have more success if there’s less competition out there on your chosen keywords.

You’ll also need to find a good and relevant item to sell from your webpage, whether it’s an affiliate product that complements your site or a product that you’ve created on your own. Actually, the cheapest thing to do is make up your own product and the easiest product to create is an e-book. If you do create an e-book with information about your chosen niche, you should convert it to PDF.  You can convert a word document to a pdf using one of the many free PDF converters available.

Having written or sourced your product, you now need to work on a sales page that will convert website visitors into customers. The hosting and website can easily be taken care of in the beginning by creating a blog on blogger.com.  The sites are easy to manage and you can set it up in minutes, plus it’s free so you can spend your funds elsewhere or save your money for future projects.

To take payments you can use a Buy Now button from Paypal. The Buy Now buttons are quite simple to set up on your page. IF and when you begin to make sales of your product, Paypal will charge a small processing fee on a business account.  You now have your own internet business. It’s not that hard, really.

So, just to recap, in order to have affordable online success you can use free keyword tools to help you discover a niche that you will be successful in, you can set up a blog on blogger thus eliminating hosting and domain costs in the beginning and you can create or find a product to sell. The only problem is that you still haven’t spent your budget of $100. What to do eh? that’s what I call affordable online success.

You could of course spend some of your budget on low cost advertising to help get visitors to your site, but there are many ways to do that for free as well. I’ll discuss how to get free traffic to your site in a future post. Watch for it!

A blogs theme or template can make or break your site

by Tricia

If you are serious about blogging you likely know that having a well put together, organized and attractive theme for your site is important.

Believe it or not, there are many people out there that judge a site initially on how it looks and if they see a blogging theme that’s a general default theme or one that’s been used on 1000’s of other sites without any kind of customization they’ll often move on to read another blog. The content on the site could be the best they could find, but they’ll leave the site simply because they don’t like the look of it. Silly really, but it’s true.

It’s a good idea to find a theme that compliments your blog and to customize it with a header that further defines your sites topic. You can pay to have a designer create a custom made theme for your site, but it’s easy enough to go into the CSS stylesheet or CSS files of a theme and change link or background colors to give the theme a more personalized look and feel.

I have a number of WordPress blogs and after spending several months looking at themes I finally changed the themes on a few of my blogs in May. I’m still keeping my eye out for themes that suit my other blogs as a few of them need a new look and or better functionality. This site could certainly use a new look.

If you are like me and you’ve been thinking of changing your sites theme it might help to know which themes are considered some of the best. I went searching for people that had already written reviews on what they consider to be the top WordPress Themes.

Triggit allows you to add links to Amazon, photos and video on the fly

by Tricia

Well I’m back from visiting Vegas.

I was really sick while I was in Vegas so I must say that I only went to Bl0gworld for two hours! However I did take in quite a bit of information during that time. I also attended part of P0stiecon (I was still sick and even missed my speaking engagement there!) and I learned quite a bit there as well.

At Blogworld I learned about a cool application/widget called Triggit. The site is in Beta right now and is only accepting people who are lucky enough to have an invitation a key. Of course I managed to get and I’m currently trying the system out.

Once you log into Triggit your given a code to put in your sites template just under the body tag. They’ve automated the system for Blogger and Typepad users, but as a WordPress user I had to manually add the coding to my site.

Once the code has been added to your site you can easily use the Triggit bookmark that can be dragged into your Firefox browsers tool bar to quickly add links to Amazon products, Commission Junction or add photos from Flickr, videos from Youtube or wine links from Wine Zap and Wine searcher directly into your posts.

As you know images often make a post a little more interesting so you can use the Triggit bookmarklet to add photos to your existing posts on the fly. Like any of the features all you have to do is click on the drop down list in the toolbar that is activated across the top of your page whenever you click on the Triggit bookmark when you are on a page with the Triggit coding and a list will appear which will allow you to pick which kind of link, image or video you’d like to add to your post.

In this case I tried adding a Flickr image. I clicked the Triggit drop down list and a Flicker search bar appeared. I typed in laptop computer and I was shown a number of thumbnails that had been tagged on Flickr with the word laptop. Once I picked a photo I clicked preview and I was then able to place the photo where I wanted it within the post. Once the photo is in the post you can move it around to align it as you wish.

I’ve mainly worked with Triggit adding Amazon links to some of my sites. All you need to do is pick Amazon from the drop down list, choose a word or phrase within your post that you’d like to create an Amazon link for and click search. Often a list of about 5 to 7 choices comes up and if I’m not totally satisfied with the choices I can always change the term to find a more appropriate link. Once I’ve found an Amazon item that I’d like to link to the word or phrase I select it and hit save. The next time I load the page the link is present within the post.

For example to link to an Amazon item for the word Ipod I followed the steps I’ve listed above and you should now see the word Ipod linked to an Amazon item. I also linked to a cool notebook accessory when I used the word laptop computer. Check it out.

I’m certain that you’ll enjoy Triggit.

I don’t have an invitations, but if you like the idea of the Triggit Tool, which is free to use BTW, go to the site and request and invite.

UPDATE: The folks at Triggit liked my post and the feedback I’ve been giving them and they granted me an access key to give you folks so you too can become Alpha testers of this great application:

I’ll tell you more about other interesting applications and companies that I discovered shortly!
