Easy way to create WordPress Blog

There are several ways to install a new blogging platform onto your web hosts server. Today I’d like to tell you the easiest way to install WordPress onto your hosting server. Similar techniques can be used for other blogging platforms and or other programs that are available through your hosts Fantastico feature.

If your web hosting account is set up with C-Panel you’re in luck. You should be able to reach your C-Panel area directly simply by placing/cpanel at the end of your domain url. For example http://yourdomain.com/cpanel. Once you connect with C-Panel you’ll have to sign in with your hosting account user name and password.

Once you have signed into the C-panel area you’ll see a number of icons. Each icon will lead you to useful features that you can use to maintain your websites, webmail, MySQL databases and many other features.

One of the icons will be called Fantastico. Click on the Fantastico icon and you’ll be taken to a page that lists all of the different software applications that Fantastico can automatically install to your directories.

If you want to install a new WordPress blog simply look for the section that says Blogs. You’ll see WordPress listed there as well as perhaps a few other blogging platforms. Click on WordPress and go through the install procedure.

You’ll be asked which directory you’d like to host your new blog on. If you only have one domain hosted with your webhost the choice will be easy. Select your domain in the first section. Then, if you want the blog to be the main feature of your domain select leave the “install in Directory” section blank. If you’d like your blog to be reachable by an url such as http://yourdomain.com/blog then place a name for the new directory in this section.

Note, if you’d like to create a blog in a sub-domain you must use the sub-domain feature in C-Panel to create a sub-domain first, once you’ve done that you’ll see the sub-domain listed in your domain choices when you attempt to install WordPress. You’d select your new sub-domain and leave the “Install directory” section blank if you want your blog to be in a domain that looks like http://blog.mydomain.com.

The rest is pretty simple. Fill in the rest of the information such as your log in user name and password. This can be, and usually is different than the log in that you use for your webhost. It could be as simple as username admin and a unique password.

Continue to follow the directions and in minutes you’ll have a new blog to begin setting up. I’ll talk about setting up a new blog in a future post.

Use C-Panel to create email account

When website owners first decide to host their site with a web host it can be very confusing. Does the site have C-Panel? If so, this will make setting up and maintaining your sites so much easier. I’m not going to go into a full discussion of what c-panel is or all of it’s features in this post. Instead I thought I’d concentrate on one of the basics – setting up an email account for your website in C-Panel.

When you view C-Panel in your web hosting account look for an icon that says Mail and click on it.

Once you are in there select – Add/remove/manage accounts

Click Add account at the bottom of that page.

Fill in the name of the email and the password. You can probably leave the quota alone. I think the default is 10 mb.

click on Create.

After you click on Create you’ll get some instructions as to how to log in to use that email account in webmail (another C-Panel icon and feature). Write this information down or use it immediately to set up your new email account in your regular email application.

This really is quite simple to do, but it can be confusing for a first time C-panel user.

How to place image code in a WordPress post

I’ve found that while a number of people have mastered the art of using their WordPress blog to write text based posts they often have trouble adding images. Since there are a lot of bloggers out there who are not true webmasters in the sense that they know how to write basic code I thought I’d occasionally write some easy to follow instructions.

How to place an image to a WordPress post:

In an earlier post I told you how to upload an image into a post. Here I will discuss how to center an image, or wrap text to the left or right of an image.

Note: This technique might work well with other blogging platforms too. I’m only writing it as wordpress instructions since that is the blogging platform that I’ve used the most.

To center a picture just either center it while you are in “rich text editor” mode, or put this extra code around the image code itself:

To have a photo to the left or right of a paragraph you must have the paragraph tags around the particular paragraph that you’re sticking the image in :

ie text of paragraph

with your image code beside the first paragraph tag

< image code > text

BUT … inside the image code simple put align=”left” or “right” near the img tag like this

< img align="left" rest of image code ....

Please eliminate all of the spaces between the tag codes when you place this code on your site. For instance shouldn’t have spaces between the < and > tags.
