How to get more traffic to your site

by Tricia

I’ve seen a few other people talking about increasing their website traffic by advertising on various sites. I suppose it could be anything from using Google Adsense, to paid link directories like the Yahoo directory or even advertising on some of the paid blogging sites.

I’ve been trying to think of ways to get more traffic to my sites. I’d like to do it without spending money if possible. Unfortunately the only way to get more traffic to your site without paying for it is to work very hard at it.

I’ve run websites, and now blogs for many years. I’ve never paid for advertising. Ever. I’ve worked very hard getting my sites listed in all the major directories and even smaller directories that suite the site. Niche directories. Where my websites are concerned I’ve made contact with other site owners and traded links, or given them permission to publish one of my articles on their site.

I’ve used similar methods for my blogs. I do think it’s a bit easier with blogs because you can leave comments on most blogs quite easily. Comment often enough on a blog and make your comments interesting, though provoking or humorous and more than likely the owner of the blog will come and visit your site. If you have good content on your site they might even add you to their blogroll or write about one of your articles.

What do you do to promote your site and get more traffic?

The website to dos checklist

by Tricia

Starting a website, setting it up properly and ensuring that everything works as it should is something that many people, especially those new to creating websites fail to do properly. I would recommend that anyone who is about to start a new website or blog read the Website To Dos site.

The page that I linked to above is basically a checklist, with full descriptions written in an easy to understand style, of all of the most important things that one should do from start to finish when creating and maintaining a website.

The checklist begins with the initial creation of your site and gives helpful information about deciding on the goals and audience of your site. The checklist then moves on to talking about how to focus the topics of your web pages, and then goes on to give you tips on optimizing your site with search engines in mind.

The checklist ends with a list and detailed information about “Web server to dos” such as setting up 404 pages to assist your visitors when a page is not found or when the url is mistyped. There’s even tips on customizing a 404 page, plus information on redirecting pages or specific urls.

I think everyone should take a look at this checklist of website to dos. I know those new to creating websites will get a lot out of it, but seasoned webmasters might also pick up a few tips or get a reminder of things they should be doing, but often skip during the process of creating a new site.

Use C-Panel to create email account

by Tricia

When website owners first decide to host their site with a web host it can be very confusing. Does the site have C-Panel? If so, this will make setting up and maintaining your sites so much easier. I’m not going to go into a full discussion of what c-panel is or all of it’s features in this post. Instead I thought I’d concentrate on one of the basics – setting up an email account for your website in C-Panel.

When you view C-Panel in your web hosting account look for an icon that says Mail and click on it.

Once you are in there select – Add/remove/manage accounts

Click Add account at the bottom of that page.

Fill in the name of the email and the password. You can probably leave the quota alone. I think the default is 10 mb.

click on Create.

After you click on Create you’ll get some instructions as to how to log in to use that email account in webmail (another C-Panel icon and feature). Write this information down or use it immediately to set up your new email account in your regular email application.

This really is quite simple to do, but it can be confusing for a first time C-panel user.
